Devine ISD releases grading details adapted for remote learning

With report cards due this week school districts around the world, like Devine ISD,  are having to make decisions upon how to report the grades now that the first report cards are due since the beginning of the remote learning phase due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  Devine ISD just released details this week on how they have adapted their normal ways of grading and reporting of grades not only on report cards , but on transcripts, determine class ranks and promotion to the next grade level.

“Devine ISD will take into  consideration the extraordinary circumstances  of the school closure and keep the best interests of the students at the center of every decision regarding promotion”, the news release stated from Devine ISD. “Although the semester will be pass/ fail, report cards will still list numerical grades.”

Devine has also decided to start mailing packets to home.

Pass/Fail Approach for Second Semester

Participation and completion of assignments is required and will result in a “pass” for the fifth and sixth six weeks. Lack of satisfactory participation will result in a “fail” for the fifth and sixth six weeks.

Secondary Specific Guidelines

  • Dual credit students will receive a letter grade from the college and a Pass/Fail for the high school course.
  • Students who are in courses to recover credit or earn a passing average after failing the first semester will work with teachers to earn a passing grade.

Transcripts/Grades

  • Class rank and the determination of Valedictorian, Salutatorian, and Honor graduates will be calculated using Fall 2019 grades.
  • The final GPA for students taking credit-bearing classes will reflect grades through the end of the first semester of the 2019-2020 school year.
  • GPA and class rank calculations for the graduating classes of 2021, 2022, and 2023 will not include Spring

2020 grades. This also applies to middle school students taking high school credit courses.

  • Please note: Although the semester will be pass/fail, Report Cards will still list numerical grades.

Promotion

  • Decisions on promoting to the next grade level will be based on the student’s performance for the entire 2019-2020 school year and will take into consideration the extraordinary circumstances of the school closure.
  • Devine ISD will keep the best interests of the students at the center of every decision regarding promotion.

Progress Reporting to Parents

  • Report Cards will be mailed to parents via by April 23.
  • Three week progress reports will be distributed by May 7.
  • Teachers will communicate with parents through email or phone calls if participation concerns are evident.
  • Please contact your child’s teacher if you have any concerns regarding academic performance or the need for additional support.
