“Gift of Hope”for Thea Marie Keskinen-Burke

Thea loves waking up and taking care of her chickens every morning. The SRD dog will help make sure she can be more independent and do the things she loves.

BBQ, Silent Auction, Live Music April 20

Thea Marie Keskinen-Burke a cheerful, adorable, six-year-old girl, and a source of joy to everyone she meets, has been given the “Gift of Hope” this year. Thea has never met a person she could not make smile. She loves God, her family, and her animals. It shines through in everything she does.

Thea suffers from Generalized Idiopathic Epilepsy. She had her first seizure at two years old. Thea has both Tonic-Clonic (Grand Mal- loss of consciousness and violent muscle spasms), and absent seizures (brief, sudden lapses in attention). She must be watched very closely while she is showering, playing outside, when watching TV, and many other aspects of her life that “normal” people might take for granted. Thea must be accompanied every second of her life, which makes it hard for her to start developing her independence.
Thea loves waking up and taking care of her chickens every morning. She has a special little hen named Leila that follows her around like a guard dog. If you see Thea with her Memere, Leila is never far behind. Her hen has also figured out how to open doors, so she will follow Thea into the house and take naps with her. Thea has even named one of the other chickens Meanie, because it was picking on her Leila. She likes to watch her broody hens as they sit on their eggs, and she waits for the chicks to hatch. Thea is like Snow White and just gathers animals to her and she cares for them just as God charged us with. She is a gentle soul, and it shows through in everything she does. We are so blessed that God gave her to us. With a seizure dog, Thea will be able to begin doing things on her own, like bathing, playing outside, and working with her chickens without constant, vigilant supervision. A seizure response dog will help her in all aspects of her life.
