John Wesley Yorke, a cherished member of our community, passed away peacefully on August 18, 2023, at the age of 90.
Born on July 3, 1933, in Flint, MI, John was the beloved son of parents who instilled in him a deep sense of commitment and an unmatched work ethic.
John’s life was characterized by his dedication to service and his unwavering love for his family. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for four years then joining the Air National Guard and retiring after 30 years of service. Displaying great skill and passion, John worked as a Jet Engine Mechanic at Kelly Air Force Base, contributing his expertise to the defense of our nation.
Outside of his military career, John’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish a small Mechanic Shop in Poteet, TX. that he would work at in the evenings.
Beyond his professional achievements, John had a zest for life. He found joy in exploring new places and experiencing different cultures through his travels. With a knack for woodworking, he created beautiful masterpieces with his own hands, showcasing both his creativity and skill. John’s eyes would light up with pride as he watched his great-grandsons play their favorite sport, baseball, always cheering them on with unwavering support.
An avid lover of good food and company, John’s backyard was often filled with laughter and the mouth-watering aroma of his delicious Bar-B-Que. Gatherings with friends and family were always cherished moments for him, creating memories that will be forever treasured.
John is preceded in death by his wives Norma Jean Yorke and Sandra Lavonne Yorke; as well as his 5 siblings. He will be dearly missed and forever remembered by his loving children, Tawana Jackson and her husband Kirk; son Charles Yorke and his wife Tammy; daughter Diana Jackson and her husband Kyle; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His kind-hearted nature, gentle smile, and unwavering devotion to those he loved will live on in their hearts and the hearts of all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Funeral services to celebrate John’s remarkable life will be held on August 24, 2023, at 10:00 am at the Lytle Methodist Church in Lytle, TX. Prior to the service, a public viewing will take place at 9:00 am, providing an opportunity for the community to pay their last respects.
Following the services, John will be laid to rest in a solemn burial ceremony at Rutledge Road in Poteet, TX, on August 24, 2023.
