Arabians win 3rd at Southside Tourney

With a game and a tournament, the Arabians had a full week last week and finished it 5-1. They won 3rd in the Southside Varsity Tournament after going 4-1. These big wins put the Arabians at 5-2 for the season and will face Pieper HS after the fall break and then compete in the Marion Varsity Tournament.
The Arabians started the week off against a good, aggressive Lytle team where we got off to a slow start as we only scored 1 point in the 1st quarter. The team really struggled to handle the intensity and pace of the game early as the Arabians rushed things on the offensive end of the floor and we had a difficult time keeping the active Pirate team off the boards. We didn’t play our game at all during this one and we got into early foul trouble and that hurt us as well. We let emotions get the better of us at times and we struggled to slow down and relax during this game. All was not lost in this one though; I think it was an eye opener to what we need to work on for the upcoming season.
Andrea Rios 6 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist. Lacy Shook 4 rebounds, 3 assists. Kelsey Dishman 3 steals. Kendall Marek 15 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal. Cece Martinez 2 rebounds, 1 assist. Liah Romano 2 points, 3 rebounds.
Over the weekend, we then went to the Southside Tournament where we played 5 games. We started off the tournament against West Campos and jumped out to a big lead early and never looked back. The Arabians did a great job of pressuring the ball and making the West Campus team uncomfortable during the game. We created lots of turnovers and that led to easy scoring opportunities.
Rios 10 points, 3 rebounds, 1 steal, 1 block. Shook 8 points, 1 rebound, 1 steal. Hein 17 points4 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals. Dishman 2 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal. Marek 16 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assist, 3 steals. Yeats 7 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals. Guajardo 5 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists. Schnautz 1 rebound. Contreras 1 rebound, 1 assist, 3 steals. Martinez 10 rebounds, 4 assists. Romano 4 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 steal.
In our second game, the Arabians then played a scrappy Alamo Heights team. We did some good things in this game early, but we struggled some in the second half. The Varsity ended up being down after the 3rd quarter but we did a great job of coming back in the 4th quarter and outscored Alamo Heights 17-4 to get the win.
Rios 1 steal. Shook 10 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 block. Hein 12 points, 2 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals, 1 block. Marek 4 points, 2 rebounds, 1 steals, 3 blocks. Garza 9 points, 7 rebounds, 1 assist. Yeats 5 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal. Contreras 2 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals. Romano 4 points, 3 rebounds, Martinez 1 assist.
Friday we played Harlandale in the first game and this was a very competitive game. The team did a good job early in this game offensively and really shot the ball well. We had great scoring quarters in the 1st and 2nd, but we struggled with stopping Harlandale and we could never pull away. Going into the 4th with a lead, but Harlandale made some shots, and we struggled with turnovers and getting good shots late in the game. We had to foul at the end of the game and Harlandale did a great job of making free throws to close out the game, 64-59.
Rios 1 assist. Shook 5 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 steals. Hein 5 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 steals. Garza 2 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal. Yeats 17 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal. Guajardo 2 points. Contreras 2 points, 2 rebounds, 1 steal. Romero 6 points, 3 rebounds.
In the second game on Friday we played an athletic Kennedy team where we struggled with their size inside early but the girls did a good job of running a zone defense to limit touches in the paint for the Rockets. We haven’t practiced our zone defenses much, but the girls did a great job of getting stops in it. The Arabians pulled away late in the game to take the W, 44-33.
Rios 5 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals, 1 charge. Shook 2 points, 2 rebounds, 5 assists. Hein 2 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals. Dishman 2 rebounds. Marek 13 points, 7 rebounds, 1 steal. Garza 8 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals. Yeats 6 points, 9rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals, Guajardo 4 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist. Martinez 4 points, 3 rebounds, 1 steal.
Finally, we finished off the tournament Saturday as we played Del Rio for 3rd place. The Arabians were definitely fighting fatigue in this one and didn’t shoot the ball real well. We did however, play good enough defense that we were able to come away with the victory and we did some really good things offensively in this game, we just struggled to make some shots. We got up 10 late and withstood a late charge by Del Rio to finish 3rd in the Southside Tourney.
Rios 2 rebounds. Shook 2 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 3 steals. Hein 17 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, 3 steals. Marek 2 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal. Garza 10 points, 3 rebounds, 1 steal. Yeats 2 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block. Guarjardo 4 rebounds. Contreras2 rebounds, 1 steal. Romero 4 points, 4 rebounds, 1 steal.
Macey Hein was our leading scorer for the tournament with 51 points and selected to the All-Tournament team. Lacey Shook was also selected to the all-tournament team for her efforts during the weekend as well. Lacey and Macey both played aggressive on ball defense for us during the tournament as well.
Overall, it was a busy week of basketball, but a week in which we learned a lot about our team. We did some real good things, but we also found out we have lots to work on to be able to get to where we want to be as a team this season. As a team, we struggled with consistency right now, but I have no doubt that this group will get there if we put in the work.
