Going 2-3 last week, the Varsity Lady Mustangs are improving each game. They faced Pearsall on Tuesday and then travelled to Floresville for a tournament. After the break, the varsity team will face Nueces Canyon and then compete in the Harper tournament December 2-4. They will open district at home against Jourdanton on December 7th.
Pearsall only had a strong second quarter when they played Natalia. Outscoring the Mavericks 9-16, the Lady Mustangs slowed down in the second quarter and the score was 29-21 at the half. Natalia came back strong in the third and fourth to win the game 50-35. Kylee Spangler earned the first double-double of the season!
Spangler 21 points, 10 rebounds, 1 charge. Jelli Padilla 11 points. Tina Fulton 4 points, 7 rebounds. McAiyla Ruiz 4 points, 3 steals. Heidi Vazquez 4 points, 5 rebounds. Bella Martinez 3 points. Yahdi Lujan 2 points, 2 steals. Trina Vera 1 point, 2 steals. Naomi Garcia 5 rebounds, 1 block.
In the Floresville tournament, Lytle faced La Vernia, Edinburg Vela, Seguin, and Floresville. Against all of these tougher schools, the Lady Mustangs held their heads high despite the score. In their first game they fell 58-31 to La Vernia. The third quarter was Natalia’s best; they held La Vernia to just 11 points and scored 10 of their own.
Spangler 14 points, 6 rebounds, 1 charge. Lujan 8 points. Padilla 6 points, 4 rebounds. Fulton 3 points, 3 rebounds, 5 steals. Garcia 2 blocks. Q1 6-17, Q2 15-35, Q3 25-40, Q4 31-58.
In their second game, Natalia played Vela. This is a #3 state ranked team and Natalia held them back from running away with the game. It was a huge learning game for the Lady Mustangs but they lost 19-53. Q1 7-15, Q3 11-32, Q3 14-42, Q4 19-53.
Lujan 5 points, 2 steals. Spangler 4 points, 3 rebounds, 1 steal, 1 charge. Padilla 4 points. Fulton 3 points, 2 rebounds, 6 steals. Ruiz 3 points, 1 charge. Vasquez 8 rebounds, 2 charges. Martinez 2 rebounds.
It was a much closer game when they faced Seguin. Only losing by 11 points, the Lady Mustangs were able to control the speed of the game a bit more than against Vela. Sequin made more mistakes and Natalia took advantage of them and held them to three points in the fourth quarter but fell 32-40.
Fulton 8 points, 3 steals, 5 rebounds, 1 assist. Padilla 7 points, 3 steals. Lujan 6 points, 4 steals, 1 assist. Garcia 5 points, 7 rebounds. Spangler 5 points, 3 rebounds, 4 steals. Q1 5-13, Q2 12-32, Q3 23-40, Q4 32-43.
In their final game against Floresville, Natalia took the win in overtime! The fourth quarter ended 38-38 and Floresville was held to just 2 points in overtime for a 48-40 Natalia win.
