April meeting report
The April meeting of the garden club was held at the Devine Golf Course’s Club House with hostesses Sondra Rackley, Susan Schott, and Susan Wisenbaker. Our special speaker was Mr. Jeff Wisenbaker, Agronomist with the National Cemetery Administration, who spoke on major gardening topics, such as turfs, shrubs, perennials, trees, and general gardening tips. Members enjoyed this informative presentation and gained new insights into gardening in South Texas. During the business meeting the following items were discussed: A report on the District VII TGC, Inc. Convention by Miriam Garcia and the sharing of our awards by President Sandra Stacy; A report on our field trip to San Antonio Botanical Gardens by Dorothy Saunders, Andrea Vasquez, Laura Sinclair, and Miriam Garcia; Our sincere thanks were expressed to members Alma Horvath, Judy Boehmer, and Sarah McAlpin for the beautiful Easter display. New business covered was: Life Memberships in District VII, a request for program ideas for next year, and a request for help with planters from the Devine Chamber of Commerce.
Good to Know
If you are encountering nutgrass/nutsedge in your yard or garden, May is a good time to spray it with products such as Image or SedgeHammer. A second application should be administered in October.
