Warhorses trample Somerset 10-3

The Varsity Warhorses used 12 hits and clean defense to keep Somerset’s offense in check en route to a 10-3 win over the Bulldogs on Friday, March 10.
Devine started the game hot, scoring in the top of the 1st inning. Leadoff man Dillon Ricord singled to left field and advanced to third on an error by a ball put into play by Newt Crouch. Jack Zimmerle followed with a single to left to drive in Ricord for a quick 1-0 lead.
Another run came in the top of the 2nd inning. Dalton Kramer singled on a fly ball to right field, advanced to second on Kyler Brown’s sacrifice bunt, stole third, and scored on an error to put Devine up 2-0.
The Bulldogs scored twice in the bottom of the inning to tie the game. The runs came courtesy of two singles, a walk, and a sac fly.
The Warhorses regained the lead in the top of the 3rd inning. Crouch was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, stole second, and took third on an error. Richie Long and Corben Boggs drew back-to-back walks to load the bases with one out before Isaac Solis singled to center to drive in Crouch. Long scored on Connor Schmidt’s single to shortstop for a 4-2 lead.
Somerset’s last run of the game came in the bottom of the 4th inning, thanks to a walk, a single, and Devine’s lone error of the game.
Devine scored four times in the top of the 5th inning to put the game away. Long led off the inning with a walk, and Solis, Schmidt, Kramer, and Jerrod Taylor hit four consecutive singles to drive in Long and Solis. Crouch followed with a two-out single to left to knock in Kramer and pinch runner Kyler Brown to go up 8-3.
The Warhorses’ last two runs came in the top of the 6th inning. Solis drew a two-out walk, Schmidt singled, and both scored on Kramer’s triple to right field.
Somerset went down in order in the bottom of the 6th inning to give Devine the 10-3 win.

The Warhorses are in action again on Thursday, March 16 in La Vernia at 4:30 pm, and Tuesday, March 21 in Carrizo Springs at 7:00 pm.
Devine then hosts Crystal City on Friday, March 24 for a 7:00 pm game.
