Arabians beat Owls 41-29 in district opener

It was a tough game against Fredericksburg, on December 28th, for the Varsity Arabians when they lost 42-54. The Lady Billies were able to get the lead early in the first and held it the rest of the game. Devine fought back but were outshot each quarter and could never regain the lead. Scores by quarter: Q1 13-14, Q2 21-82, Q3 32-40, Q4 42-54.
Maddie Mata scored 6 points with 3 rebounds and an assist. Ally Taylor 4 points and 1 rebound. Clarissa Zamora 2 points and 1 rebound. Gabby Rodriguez 2 points. Megan Runyan 5 points, 8 rebounds, and an assist. Preslee Quisenberry 6 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, and a block. Macey Hein 7 points and 1 steal. Sierra Pompa 10 points, 7 rebounds, 1 assist, and a block. Alissa Stehle 2 rebounds, and 1 assist.
Arabians beat Ingram Moore
In their last game of 2018, the Arabians beat Ingram Moore in an impressive victory. The Arabians came out strong and aggressive scoring 18 points in the first and holding Ingram to 3. Devine’s defense stopped Ingram from getting into the paint for easy points and Ingram could not sink any baskets from outside the 3 point line. Macey Hein and Preslee Quisenberry each had 1 three pointer.
Devine ended the half 31-9 and they came out strong in the third quarter with 19 points. Ingram finally came into the game in the fourth and outscored Devine 9-15 but it was too late and Devine won 59-27.
Ingram had 33 turnovers that the Arabians capitalized on. Gabby Rodriguez scored 4 points with 3 rebounds, 1 assist, and 2 steals. Megan Runyan 4 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals. Kaylee Howard 3 rebounds and 3 assists. Preslee Quisenberry 6 points, 1 rebound, 4 assists, and 6 steals. Macey Hein 8 points, 1 rebound, 2 assists, and 2 steals. Sierra Pompa 13 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, and a steal. Alissa Stehle 2 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and a steal. Clarissa Zamora 5 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist and 2 steals. Maddie Mata 8 points, 6 rebounds,1 assist, 4 steals, and a block. Scores by quarter: Q1 18-3, Q2 31-9, Q3 50-12, Q4 59-27.
First District Win
Heading into district with a 18-5 record, the Arabians have a tough road ahead of them. In their first district game, they faced Hondo (15-9) last Friday night. It started off as a back and forth battle of who would control the game and Devine came out on top with a 41-29 win. Hondo was too aggressive and by the end of the game, they had 2 players with 4 fouls and one player fouled out. Only one Devine player ended up in foul trouble with 4 fouls.
Devine ended the first quarter 13-8 and continued to outshoot Hondo in the second to end the half 28-14. The Owls were determined to close the gap and added 11 points to their score and held Devine to just 9 points. The final quarter was rough for both teams and but Hondo could not catch up to the lead Devine built in the first half. The game ended 41-29.

The Arabians are now 19-5 overall and 1-0 in district. They will play in Crystal City (13-3) on Friday January 11th and then at home against Pearsall January 15th.
