Owens resigns from Natalia ISD School Board

Owens’ resignation is effective Jan. 1, 2018.

Natalia School Board member Eric Owens has resigned his position, effective Monday, Jan. 1, 2018.
Owens’ recent move to a home outside the Natalia ISD district boundaries requires him to vacate his seat with one year and ten months left in his term.
Owens was elected in Nov. 2016.
“Because he does have over six months, it is the obligation of this Board to fill his position,” President Eric Smith said.
The Board can either hold a special election, which Smith said would cost the district at least $10,000, or appoint someone to fill the remainder of Owens’ term.
Smith recommended the second option.
“My opinion would be to have a subcommittee that each Board member could submit one to two names for consideration for this position,” Smith said. “Community members that they feel could be an asset to the district.”
Board members will submit their recommendations to the subcommittee of Smith, Tiffany Rodriguez, and Jack Bradley, Jr., by Friday, Dec. 15.
Recommended residents who are interested will then fill out an application and have a short interview with the subcommittee before a final recommendation is made at the January Board meeting.
