Major catalytic converter theft spree hits area; $1k reward offered

Catalytic converters, and the precious metals inside, have been disappearing for many months. But this past week, two Devine businesses were hit with the theft of 16 catalytic converters.
Average Catalytic Converters are valued at $800-$1,200 each, making estimated damages well over $12,000 according to our calculations. And that’s only for the catalytic converter, not the other damages incurred while it’s torn off.
Medina County Crime Stoppers is now offering a $1,000 REWARD for information leading to the arrest and indictment of individuals involved in this crime.
“It’s a real problem,” said Sheriff Randy Brown. “These thieves slide under the vehicle with a Sawzall and take it out, disconnecting the muffler. They also see the little bb’s inside which are some sort of precious metal such as platinum. Thefts of catalytic converters are happening all over the place, here and in Hondo, Devine, Frio County, everywhere.”

The penalty for thefts like these varies, due to the different value of each catalytic converter.
“In a case like the large amount of catalytic converters stolen from Devine business this past week, you are looking at Felony charges that can lead to prison time. But any theft is a crime and it means jail time,” Sheriff Brown warned.
He says that victims of this crime will realize you’ve been hit as soon as you start the vehicle.
“It will sound a lot different, a lot louder, like a hotrod,” Sheriff Brown said.
Devine PD has also had 10 catalytic converters stolen in 2021.
