The Warhorse track team came oh-so-close to capturing its second consecutive Area Track Championship. Cuero topped Devine 121 to 105 in the final point standings to take the title. The remaining 8 teams in the competition weren’t close to matching the talent level that the Gobblers and Warhorses had on display last week in Poteet.
Dillon Ricord led in points (43) and qualified for Regional in all 5 events in which he participated. Dillon’s three wins in the 100m dash, 200m dash, and Long Jump continued his personal streak of placing 1st in those events in each of his track meets this season. Trent Laughlin won the 110m hurdles and Guido Zapata placed 2nd to earn 18 points in that event. Guido and Trent teamed up again in the 300m hurdles to get 2nd and 5th place respectively and 11 points.
Jack Zimmerle (2nd) and Corben Boggs (6th) tallied 9 points in the Shot Put and combined for 12 points in the Discus with Jack getting 2nd place and Corben coming in 4th. Javi Torres earned 2 points in Pole Vault. The remaining 18 points were recorded by the relay teams with the 4x200m (Grant Collins, Butters Hernandez, Luke Torres, and Ricord) placing 2nd and the 4x400m (Collins, Hernandez, Torres, and Laughlin) coming in 6th place.

A few of the Warhorses share their thoughts on the upcoming Regional Meet:
Guido Zapata: I got to compete at regionals last year in the 300m hurdles. Having the opportunity to compete in both 110 and 300 hurdles was my goal for this year.
Luke Torres: The guys that run the 4x200m relay know that the ones who practice hard all the way through usually come out the winner. I think we have a great chance to make it to State.
Jack Zimmerle: I’m excited. I’ve been twice, and like before, I will compete as hard as I can and enjoy the trip.
Dillon Ricord: I am thankful and blessed to go back to Regional for the fourth time. I give all the grace and glory to God that I am able to go in each of the 5 events that I compete in.
Isaiah Oropeza: It takes a team to make it possible to qualify in a relay event and I have really good teammates that helped make this possible.
Trent Laughlin: I am excited about going back to Kingsville for the 3rd time. My plan as a senior is to run faster, not slower.
The Regional Meet is held on the Texas A&M Kingsville campus at Javelina Stadium. On Friday, April 28 all 4A teams will begin running preliminaries at 10:30 am while field events will start at 3:30 pm. At 9:00 am on Saturday, April 29 the remaining field events will take place followed by the running finals at 1:30 pm. The awards ceremony will occur shortly after the conclusion of the mile relay which begins at 5:35 pm.
