Spring Safety and Storm Preparedness

Medina Electric Cooperative urges everyone to take action

(Hondo, Texas) – 3/25/2024 – As spring approaches, the threat of severe weather events such as torrential rain, flooding, high winds, and lightning require preparedness. The consequences of failing to identify warnings or adequately prepare can be severe, leading to injuries and even fatalities. As the season unfolds, Medina Electric Cooperative urges everyone to take note of the necessary precautions to safeguard themselves and their loved ones.

Avoid Downed Power Lines: When encountering downed power lines, steer clear, as they pose a significant safety hazard. Immediately report any downed lines to the local utility or 9-1-1 and maintain a safe distance.
Generator Safety: Exercise caution when using generators during power outages. Place generators outdoors in well-ventilated areas away from windows to prevent carbon monoxide buildup. Always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines and safety instructions.
Lightning Safety: Seek shelter indoors during thunderstorms and avoid open areas. Refrain from using electrical appliances and plumbing fixtures during lightning storms, as they can conduct electricity. If caught outdoors, avoid tall structures and seek shelter in low-lying areas.
Outage Readiness: Be ready for power outages by establishing an emergency plan. Familiarize yourself with evacuation routes and compile an emergency supply kit with essentials like water, non-perishable food, and first aid supplies.
Sign Up for Outage Alerts: Stay informed about power outages in your area through your Medina EC SmartHub account. Being aware of outage updates can help you take timely action to ensure your safety and well-being. Learn more about Medina EC outage alerts at MedinaEC.org/Outage-Alerts.
