Roxanna Dutton Schwinge

Roxanna Dutton Schwinge was born March 24, 1943 and passed in her home April 6, 2024.


She was born in Salem, Illinois to Jack Dutton and Edna Earle Whitson. Her childhood included moves following her father’s career in the oil industry and later she settled in San Antonio, Texas. She attended Thomas Jefferson High School in her teenage years. There she was an honor student, a member of the Lassos squad, and a varsity cheerleader. After graduating she went on to attend the University of Texas, Austin and later Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, and received her Bachelor’s degree with a double language major in both English and Spanish in 1966. Also during this time on September 5, 1964 she married Gene Otto Schwinge and they began their family having Gene Otto Schwinge, Jr. and Roxanna Kate Schwinge. She and Gene had settled in Devine, Texas in the mid 1960’s. Subsequently, she had began her career in education and taught over 30 years for Devine, Medina Valley, Natalia, and Northside ISD in San Antonio. She enjoyed teaching both Spanish and English to high school and junior high students and retired in 1992. Through the years she enjoyed having a small farm with Gene and they had many pets and livestock over the span of 60 years of marriage. She was an avid reader, cat lover, and dedicated grandmother. She was a two time breast cancer survivor.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years Gene O. Schwinge, son, Gene O. Schwinge, Jr., daughter Roxanna Kate Rushing (Talbert White). Grandchildren, Jenna C. Rushing, Glendon “Dakota” Rushing.
A private memorial will be held for the family at a later date.
