As DHS Seniors of 2024 conclude their public education, various community groups are celebrating their success with parties in their honor. Wednesday, April 10, begins the festivities with an after-school ice cream social hosted by the Current Events Club at 302 W. Benton Avenue.
Seniors of the DHS Class of 2024, class sponsors, administrators, and school board members are invited to attend. Fun, fellowship, ice cream floats, and cookies will be served; outdoor yard games and “making memories” activities played; introductions of seniors, their interests and plans shared; and, drawings to “favorite, locally-owned eateries” fill the first after-school event of their final school year. (Be sure to complete and turn in your “Information Sheet” to your class sponsor, Seniors!) Parking is available at both the First Baptist and First Methodist churches.
One of several long-standing community traditions of the club and DHS community celebrations, this is just one more way that Devine supports its young people. In years, even decades past, older siblings, parents, grandparents- maybe even a few great-grandmothers- have been honored and congratulated by the Current Events Club. The gathering has changed: back in the 50s, 60s, and 70s, the event was an afternoon tea for senior girls. Later, in keeping with the times, the club changed the event to include graduating senior boys as well. From tea to ice cream floats, white gloves to corn hole, senior classes of Devine High School have been recognized for over 60 years!
Education is just one mission of the Current Events Club. In addition to this senior event, the club also supports the Devine Independent School District through the local scholarship program, FCCLA, other clubs and organizations, and most recently, as a donor to the newly-formed Devine Education Foundation.
Seniors, the Current Events Club looks forward to meeting and treating you on April 10th! Congratulations to the DHS Graduating Class of 2024!
