Fall has arrived and so has the Friendship Art Club’s Art Show and Sale. At the September meeting, plans were finalized and developed for booth set up, the raffle display, judging and the Student Art Show. The show is Saturday, September 30, 9am-4pm. Artists who are displaying their works may set up their booths on Friday, September 29 between 10am and 2 pm. The community center will be closed from 2 pm to 5 pm for the judging of the entries in the competition.
The show will open at 9 am, Saturday morning, to visitors. As well as the judging results, there are 22 booths displaying the work of area artists, the Student Art Show and Competition and the drawing.
Among the artists participating in this year’s show are Linda Bendele, Robert Fraga and Lindy Wheeler with their alcohol ink creations. Some oil painters include Linda Keller, Sally Lewis, Shirly Friesenhahn, James Abernathy, Jane Brown and Liz Bendele. Dale Andrews will display some of his more recent palette knife oil paintings.
Watercolorist and graphite artist, Roberta Andrews, will share her animal and children themed work. Other watercolorists include Mary Killough and Ginger Maxwell. Dee Thompson will feature colored pencil work as well as graphite and oil. Janna Hawes and Laurel Aguilar are among talented jewelry exhibitors. These club members are among many area artists whose work will be featured on Saturday, September 30.
In addition to these artists, our younger art students are represented in the Student Art Show. Work will be displayed from Devine, Natalia, Lytle and Somerset High Schools. Junior High Schools will also be represented by students from Devine, Natalia, Lytle and Somerset Junior High Schools. These schools also compete for Community Excellence Awards. Last year’s winners were Lytle High School and Lytle Junior High School. Individual awards are given to student art work.
The club also sponsors a drawing to fund scholarships and other art education programs in the community. Items in the drawing include cash prizes as well as a regulator wall clock, a queen sized handmade quilt and original art work.
The Art Show and Sale seeks to make original art work available to the community for reasonable prices. The show is an opportunity to view excellent examples of many different media and also highlight the creativity of our young people in the Student Art Show. The Peoples’ Choice Award is a new feature in which visitors have the opportunity to select and vote for their own favorite piece of art work! Visitors can judge the show!
Hospitality is available for the show exhibitors and lunch choices and drinks are available to all from Larry’s of Castroville.
The October meeting program is related to the Art Show. As a follow up to the art competition, George Rodriguez will critique member’s art work entered in the competition. A critique is designed to educate an artist about the strong or weak points in his/her work and suggest how to improve. George is the general manager of Jerry’s Artarama, a talented artist and a frequent judge in area art shows.
The next meeting of the Friendship Art Club is Tuesday, October 10 at the Lytle Church of Christ in the Fellowship Hall. A pot luck lunch follows the meeting and program. The club meets every Tuesday morning for painting and fellowship. For information, please call Jane Brown, 210-415-2546.
