The Devine High School Marching Band is exciting about presenting their new halftime show for the first time this Friday night during halftime show at the Devine vs Kennedy football game in San Antonio.
This year’s 2018 UIL Contest show is entitled “Phoenix Rising” written by Randall Standridge.
“The phoenix is a mythological symbol of life, death, and rebirth. Stravinsky’s ‘Firebird’ serves as the inspiration for this exciting production that provides great dramatic musical and visual possibilities. Fiery is a good description!,” said Jeff W. Miller, MM, Devine High School Director of Bands.
The production includes four parts:
Part One: ‘Beginnings’
Part Two: ‘Flight’
Part Three: ‘Endings’
Part Four: ‘ReBirth’
Three Soloists
“There are actually (3) soloists for this year’s show – each providing unique tone color to the specific moment of the music”, siad Miller.
Part One begins with a French Horn Solo played by Christian Osorio – senior.
Part three, which depicts the ‘ending’ time of the Phoenix, includes a dramatic solo performed by senior Amy Robinson on bassoon – NOT an instrument you would expect in marching band, but one that perfectly fits the mood of tragedy.
The fouth part, ‘ReBirth’ begins with the sound of birds (literally) and a beautiful flute solo played by sophomore Josephine Taitano.
Bird noises accent the movements
As an added layer to the overall production, the Warhorse Band will also have sounds produced electronically! These sounds include a ‘hawk screech’, a ‘rise’ in pitch, a ‘fall’ in pitch, and of course ‘birds’! Each of these sounds will help accent the moments in the music depicting the life of the Phoenix.
Colors colors colors
Colors used throughout are mixtures of reds, yellows, browns primarily and will surround the performing band members with Color Guard, Props, and this year along the sideline with our Front Ensemble!
Amazing choreography
“This production is a perfect mix of great sounds, fun movement, and amazing choreography! Please enjoy the show!! — Mr. Miller
