Arabians claim fourth at Area Track Meet; 10 to compete at Regional

The Devine Arabians faced stiff competition in last Wednesday’s Area Meet held at Warhorse Stadium. Gonzales, Navarro, and Cuero finished top three. Ten Arabians qualified for Regional in Kingsville on April 26-27.
“Even though we did not win the overall championship, our girls did a great job competing to the best of their abilities,” stated Head Coach Lon Cozby. “The competition is really good at this level and having ten move on to the next level is a great accomplishment.”
Bright spots for the Arabians included freshman Kennedy Duncan knocking five seconds off her PR to finish third in the 100m Hurdles. Senior Alissa Stehle advancing to Regional once again in Triple Jump and senior Mari Murillo advancing in the 1600m Run, finishing second overall. Analea Brooks took silver in Discus.
Unusual record occurrence
Not often is a school record broken and a team fails to qualify for the next round of competition. However, that is exactly what happened to one such team at this year’s Area Meet.
The 4x100m Relay team consisting of Alissa Stehle, Chasity Reyes, Dana Aaron, Aaliyah Terrazas broke the school record for the event yet did not qualify for Regional. Their 50.79 time was good for 5th place in Area as Cuero, Pearsall, La Vernia, and Navarro all topped the Arabians.
The previous school record was recorded in 1986. Members of that team were Judy Yanta, Velma Boone, Colleen Whitney, and Terri DuBose.
Quote/Unquote
Alissa Stehle, Triple Jump—This being my third year advancing to Regional, I expect nothing less than the best from myself. I want to prove that dedicating six years to Triple Jump didn’t go to waste. Not only am I excited for myself, but I can’t wait to cheer all of my other teammates on at their events as well. One of my favorite aspects of this sport is being the best teammate and supporter that I can be.
Kennedy Duncan, 300m Hurdles—Qualifying for Regional and setting a new PR was so exciting. I was able to achieve this due to all the amazing support from my teammates and coaches. I am going to continue working hard to prepare for Regional.
