8th Grade Fillys sweep Carrizo Springs

8th Grade Maroon
In their final game of the year, the 8th Grade Maroon Fillys put together everything they had learned this season for a final win over Carrizo Springs. It took everything they had and every second of the game plus never giving up to get this win.
“Carrizo Springs jumped out to an early lead, finishing the 1st quarter 14-8. They maintained a lead 23-20 at the half. Both teams pressed and broke each other’s press. They changed defense and schemes. Devine couldn’t take the change of game, finishing the 3rd quarter trailing 31-40. During the last 7 minutes of the game, Devine’s pressure caused many turnovers and they took advantage. The persistence and unwillingness to go down without a fight finally made a difference. In the final seconds of the game, Devine took the lead 45-44 and carried that lead until the buzzer, winning the final game,” as reported by Coach Julie Oropeza.
Neenah Guarrero scored 9 points, 5 steals, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists. Bailey Oropeza 7 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals, and 2 assists. Angelina Rios 1 rebound, 1 assist, and 1 steal. Rebecca Mares 1 assist and 1 steal. Cameron Hutton 17 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 steals. Joselyn Guajardo 3 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 steals.
“This group was so fun to work with. All they know how to do is have fun. They come together as a team, really understanding their roles and working together. The improvement from one year to the next was really exciting,” said Coach Oropeza.
8th Grade Gold
In their final game of their middle school career, the 8th Grade Gold Fillys beat Carrizo Springs 42-29. “In the last game, it seemed everyone was on the same page. Defense was tighter and offense was smoother. In the 1st quarter, the Fillys started off trailing 8-10. With added pressure, the Fillys were able to take control of the second quarter and lead at the half 21-13. In the 3rd quarter, the lead was stretched to 32-19 and Devine closed out the game 42-29, scoring their highest point total of the season. This group has been so fun to work with. I am very pleased with how far they have come,” said Coach Oropeza.
