8th Maroon Fillys Bring Home 3rd from Hondo Tournament
After two well played games, the 8th Grade Maroon Fillys brought home 3rd place from the Hondo basketball tournament.
The first round game was between the Fillys and the Del Rio Queens. The Fillys got off to a very sluggish start ending the 1st quarter 0-8 and the half 3-10. After the half, the Fillys tightened up their defense and played smarter offense outscoring Del Rio 11-8 in the 3rd making the score 14-18. Continuing the comeback, the Fillys pulled even at 22-22 late in the 4th quarter. With just seconds remaining, the Queens scored the go ahead points and held off the Fillys’ comeback with a final score 22-25.
Neenah Guerrero scored 3 points with 5 steals and 2 assists. Baily Oropeza scored 2 points with 2 steals, 1 assist and 3 rebounds. Angelina Rios had 3 steals and 2 assists. Jordon Erxleben had 3 rebounds. Andrea Rios had 1 steal and 1 rebound. Amber DuBose had 2 rebounds. Korynn Arche 4 points and 3 rebounds. Joselyn Guajardo had 1 rebound. Tahtiana Gilbert scored 13 points with 5 steals and 4 rebounds.
The opening game loss landed the Fillys in the game for 3rd place against Loma Vista. The Fillys jumped out ahead early leading 10-2 at the end of the 1st quarter. Then, during the 2nd quarter the score was stretched 14-2. At the end the Fillys won fairly easily 20-10, capturing 3rd place in Hondo’s tournament.
Guerrero had 2 points with 4 steals and 2 assists. Oropeza scored 2 points with 2 steals and 2 rebounds. Rios had 4 points with 2 steals, Erxleben had 2 rebounds. Rios scored 1 point with 2 steals and 2 rebounds. DuBose had 3 rebounds. Arche had 1 steal and 2 rebounds. Gilbert had 8 points with 3 steals and 4 rebounds. Cameron Hutton had 4 points with 5 steals and 2 rebounds.
The Fillys will face Crystal City at home on Thursday and then they will host the Devine Tournament on Saturday.
