17 Lytle track athletes run at Alamo City Mile

Seventeen Lytle long distance runners took part in last Saturday’s Alamo City Mile at Ferrara Stadium. According to Head Coach Gilbert Ruiz, over 300 runners competed in the open 1600m race that was available to those that were able and more than willing to compete against some of the best long distance runners that San Antonio and the surrounding area had to offer.
“We had 17 runners that gave up their first day of Spring Break to go and get in this extra race,” said Ruiz. “This is the most we have participated in this event. Last year we had 10 go with eight setting personal records. All 17 of our runners this year set PR’s! Last Spring our best girl time in the 1600m was 5:43.98 and we had five girls go below that this year. One of those was 8th grader Klayre Cook with a time of 5:36.51.”
The Saturday race came after the high school and middle school teams competed in Dilley Thursday night at the Wolfpack Relays.
Coach Ruiz was especially proud of the middle school runners saying, “Our junior high 1600m runners won all four divisions (7th Girls-Vanessa Ayala, 7th Boys-Nathan Garza, 8th Girls-Frankie Scotello, 8th Boys-Bryan Montes) in Dilley which is something I believe we have never done before. I was very proud of all of them as they are seeing progress in all the work they continue to put in every week.”
