Sweet tea contest at Heritage Festival April 27

A sweet tea contest is one of the events at the Heritage Festival on Saturday, April 27 in Hondo.

The Medina County Museum along with the City of Hondo and the Hondo area Chamber of Commerce welcome you and your family to the Heritage Festival. Set for Saturday, April, 27, the festival boasts a day filled with historical snapshots at what living in Medina County was like at the turn of the 20th Century.
Don’t miss the Mariachis, the Irish Folk dancers and the Bluegrass group, Joyful Noise, who will all perform on stage throughout the day. Stop by the old Pioneer Town, observe the beautiful carriage and discover what chuck wagon food might’ve tasted like back in the day.
Be sure to tour the museum and take part in the Scavenger Hunt going on throughout out the day. You’re guaranteed to find something you’ve never seen before! Prizes will be awarded for different age groups.
Relive the past with the quilters, wool spinners, blacksmith, beekeeper, Robert Wanat’s Tiny Town Museum and other demonstrators as they portray life during the settlement days. Bring your friends and enjoy a hay ride, some old time games, a petting zoo, complete with a llama, and get up close and personal with some Longhorn Steers. Get a peek into the past with a Civil War Re-enactment that will illustrate life during wartime in our community.
Several food demonstrations will take place throughout the day, including a chuck wagon tasting, tortilla and salsa making and learn how sauerkraut was made.
Speaking of food, bring your appetite as there will be food vendors available throughout the day to fill your belly and quench your thirst.
What’s that? You’d like some Sweet Tea!? You’re in luck as during this event you will witness the first Sweet Tea Contest held in Medina County! Get there early to sample all the entries and be sure to vote on your favorite as awards will be given to 1st, 2nd, 3rd and People’s Choice! Think YOU make the best sweet tea around? Get yourself over to the Hondo Public Library and grab an application. This contest is open to the public and entries are due by April 24.
Feeling nostalgic? Who remembers the ceiling tiles that were displayed at the old Flightline Café? These tiles hold a special place in our history as most of them were created by the students and staff of the navigational training school housed at the airbase. In an effort to raise funds for the Medina County Museum, several of these tiles will be on sale at a very special price for you to take home and enjoy. More details to come.
Times of events will be posted at the gate. Admission is FREE and everyone is invited.
