Warhorses up for Southwest Legacy’s challenge

San Antonio Southwest Legacy is 2-0 on the young season after opening wins versus San Antonio Lanier (27-7) and San Antonio Jefferson (32-7). Those two victories for the somewhat-new program has them playing with a lot of confidence. The Warhorses travel to Legacy Friday night looking to bounce back from their 33-28 home loss against Somerset last Friday night.
“Coach Tarvin and his staff have those boys playing really well,” Head Coach Paul Gomez said about the upcoming ballgame. “They have done a great job with that program. Our defense will have to be on our A-game this week.”
Expect Legacy to be big up front on both sides of the ball. Their offensive line does a great job with both the run and pass protection. Legacy utilizes a two-quarterback system with one being the better passer and the other a better runner.
Coach Gomez said they “mix them up and really execute well. They have a good stable of running backs and their receivers all do a great job of getting open.”
Offensively, when the ball is in the air, look for #12 Zezar Tovar to target their big, tall receiver #11 Pete Lopez. Tovar has completed 14 of 18 attempts for 166 yards and one touchdown on the season. Lopez has six receptions for 107 yards including that one touchdown pass from Tovar.
Dual running backs Homer Flores (#6, 16 carries for 150 yards) and Marcus Cantu 9#28, 19 for 90) lead the ground game for the Titans.
They also tend to shake things up on defense often going in either a 3-4, a 6-2, or a 4-3 defense.
Legacy has a big and aggressive defensive line with #52 Zach Luna possibly being their best player at the defensive end spot. Gomez is impressed with their secondary cover guys and the aggressiveness of their linebackers.
“Once again we have to take care of us and worry about us,” Gomez continued. “We have to practice with great focus and intensity all week; that’s really all we can control. Every practice rep has to be a game rep! We will put our heads down and get to work.”
The stadium address is listed as 4495 SW Verano Parkway — Von Ormy, Texas 78073. Kickoff is set for 7:30pm.
