Warhorses prepare for District

The Devine Warhorses are ready for more, they may be 1-6, but they are ready for more. Facing Pearsall on Tuesday and Canyon Lake, Wimberly, and Daven Port in the Marion Tournament, the Warhorses are ready to host their home tournament this weekend.
Playing in Pearsall last Tuesday, the Warhorses were 64% at the free throw line but it was not enough for the win. Pearsall won 60-47.
“The boys took some steps forward against Pearsall. We improved our free throw percentage and it needs to continue to improve. We turned the ball over less. We did not win on the boards and we had periods of low scoring. We WILL continue to improve,” said Coach Even Eads.
Marcus Espinosa had 3 points, Sage Cruz 1, Caden Hanson 18, Kaiveri Alverez 9, Peyton Carr 6, Xavier Contreras 5, Chris Ortiz 5 points. FTP 64%. Q1 14-21, Q2 25-35, Q3 27-49, Q4 47-60.
“The Warhorses competed their butts off for three games in a very tough tournament against three playoff caliber teams. We are struggling to put together four quality quarters in a row. We have minutes of good offensive action and effective defense and we improved and grew as a team. Congrats to ‘X’! The tournament coaches selected Xavier Contreras as All Tournament Player. He does a good job ending our stretches of poor play. He is our vocal leader,” said Coach Eads.
Devine faced Canyon Lake in their first game, they were down 22-40 at the half and they held them to just 10 points in the third. Their biggest quarter was the final quarter where they scored 20 points but it was not enough. Devine lost 42-66.
Hanson lead with 12 points, Cruz 6, Isaiah Morin 3, Alverez 4, Carr 1, Contreras 6, and Ortiz had 4 points. FTP 60%. Q1 9-21, Q2 22-42, Q3 24-52, Q4 42-66.
Facing the ever tough Wimberly, Devine continued to play hard but came up short again at 55-75. Hanson was on fire this game with 24 points! Espinosa had 5 points, Cruz 4, Alverez 4, Carr 6, Contreras 6, and Ortiz 4 points.
In their final game of the tournament, Devine took on Daven Port and it was a thigh game. Both teams played hard and Devine lead 22-20 at the half. Down by 6 at the end of the third, the Warhorses were aggressive and closed the gap some but were still down 3 points at the end. Daven Port won 51-48.
Hanson again lead with 12 points, Espinosa 7, Cruz 4, Morin 3, Alverez 1, Carr 2, Contreras 10, and Ortiz had 6 points.
Season Stats: Ortiz 36 points, 48 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals, 11 fouls, 5 charges. Cruz 27 points, 39 rebounds, 6 assists, 16 steals, 4 blocks, 10 fouls, 3 charges. Alverez 48 points, 20 rebounds, 11 assists, 1 block, 14 fouls, 2 charges. Contreras 56 points, 29 rebounds, 12 assists, 15 steals, 11 fouls, 2 charges.
