Scoring 48 points is quite a feat. Point totals near 50 usually require a lil help from the defensive side of the ball. The Horses got a lot of help from its defensive unit who scored two of the seven total touchdowns, forcing three fumbles while recovering two, gathering two interceptions, and deflecting several Javelina pass attempts along the way.
Game ball #1
After Crystal City cut the Devine lead to one point at 7-6, linebacker Sergio Martinez lowered his shoulder into a Javelina running back jarring the ball loose in the process. Brady Hackebeil was there to pounce on the ball. Three plays later, the Horses scored to take a 14-6 lead.
Game ball #1 goes to Sergio and Brady, the catalysts of Crystal City’s first turnover of the ballgame that led to Justin Contreras’ 2-yard score.
Game ball #2
Devine’s entire secondary has played well in the two convincing district victories. Breaking up pass attempts and intercepting passes is getting to be a common theme when opponents try to toast the Warhorses by putting the ball in the air.
Game ball #2 goes to Xsavior Martinez. Xsavior, finally completely healthy, has had two outstanding performances back to back. He broke up several pass attempts in week one against Hondo and versus Crystal City, he was even better.
Xsavior did not let any receiver get comfortable or wide open in their route. He deflected multiple passes and came up with an interception on a Brady Hackebeil deflection to thwart another Javelina scoring opportunity. Xsavior also recorded several tackles and assists.
Game ball #3
With the game in hand at 42-12 and Crystal City looking to get off the field, the Horses defense wasn’t quite through putting their mark on the victory or putting a few more clicks on the scoreboard.
Game ball #3 goes to Peyton Carr. With a little over a minute left in the fourth quarter, the Javelinas coughed the ball up once more. Peyton, still very much focused on his read and defensive assignment, saw the ball bounce off the fake grass and into his grasp as he sprinted 20 yards to cap off the 48-point performance.
Strangely enough, Peyton commented to me in the hallway Monday that he had the exact thought of a fumble, scoop, and score right before the Javelinas snapped the ball.
Game ball #4
Ok, defense, quit ‘hogging’ all the game balls from the Javelina contest (no pun intended). We get it. You’re playing good right now.
Someone else playing extremely good is quarterback Brady Hackebeil who had a heck of a game rushing for 100 yards on only 11 carries. He also scored twice.
Game ball #4 goes to Brady but not solely due to his rushing stats. Offense was not the only place he left a mark.
After Crystal City cut Devine’s lead to 21-12, Brady returned the ensuing kickoff from the Devine 20 all the way to the Javelina 39 yard line.
After that 41-yard return and 4:13 left in the third quarter, Brady took the snap and sprinted 39 yards right up the gut of the Javelina defense to put the Horses up 28-12. The onslaught was on from there. Brady also deflected the pass that Xsavior Martinez snagged for an interception.
For those really paying attention, Brady also was involved in game ball #1 and game ball #2 recognitions.
In short, Brady had 100 yards rushing, two touchdowns, and a fumble recovery, a deflection that led to an interception, and a 41-yard kickoff return, and recorded a few tackles along the way. Is there anything that I could have possibly not mentioned?
Oh yeah…good job sophomore!
