Xavier Garcia qualifies for Regional Cross Country; Warhorse team misses out by 3 points

Junior Warhorse Cross Country runner Xavier Garza qualified for Regional by finishing fifth place overall at last Wednesday’s District 29-4A Meet in Devine. Garza ran a 17:56 on the 3.15-mile course.
As a team, Devine finished 3 points out of third place that would have netted the entire team a chance to compete at Regional. It has been over 25 years since an entire boys’ team qualified for the Regional Meet. Unfortunately, this excellent opportunity slipped by as I feel we were more than capable of achieving that goal.
Chris Ortiz (13th19:25), Zachary Alvarez (20th-20:10), Rylan Mata (21st-20:12), Matt Madrid (22nd-20:16), TJ Mendoza (27th-21:19), and Marcus Angel Espinosa (29th-21:32) rounded out the final standings for the Warhorses.
Team rankings: 1st Carrizo Springs 40, 2nd Hondo 41, 3rd Crystal City 78, 4th Devine 81, 5th-Pearsall 118.
