Sheriff’s deputies make $2.6 million drug bust on I-35 coming through Devine

Last week, the Medina County Sheriff’s Department took over $2.6 million worth of drugs off  I-35 coming through Devine.

Sheriff Randy Brown stated, “This is a considerable amount of drugs….this is the biggest bust our department ahs made in the past 27 years and probably in the entire history of Medina County Sheriff’s office.”

“This is the kind of busts they make at the borders, and somehow this load got through and we were able to stop it from getting any further,” Sheriff Brown said.

“We have to approach drugs very differently than we did years ago. We called the DEA in to assist with the recovery of some of this because there are drugs out there that can be dangerous just to come into contact with at all. They wear suits and respirator masks and have negative pressure rooms to open containers, just like you see in the medical field.”

“The heroin was in a container that was completely welded shut, so a reciprocating saw had to be used to get into those,” Sheriff Brown adds.

A press release states:

“On Wednesday April 15, 2020 at approximately 12 PM, a Medina County Deputy initiated a traffic stop on an 18-wheeler traveling North on IH 35 near Devine around the 124 mile marker. K-9 Leo was deployed and gave a positive alert for the presence of a narcotic odor inside the box trailer.

After further inspection of the loaded 18-wheeler, approximately 30 kilos of “Ice”, crystal methamphetamine and 10 kilos of “White China Heroin” were located and seized.

The drugs were hidden within a load of miscellaneous products and concealed in 4 separate containers. The total street value of these drugs is estimated to be over $2.6 million dollars. The driver was detained pending further investigation.”
