95-year-old WWII Navy vet and wife of 70 years beat COVID-19 virus

The family of Grandpa George Bernard Wall and Grandma Christene celebrated a huge victory as the 95-year-old couple overcame all odds and beat the deadly COVID-19 virus. They were treated at Methodist Hospital in Katy, TX, and have family members rooting for them all over Texas, including family members in Devine.

These two were in isolation for over 14 days at Methodist Hospital and they were finally reunited.

“I was told on day 1 by a doctor they were not ventilator candidates. It would not benefit them. Mom and dad handled all of this very well…look at all of the struggles in history they’ve endured…The Great Depression, WWII…this was just another chapter in their book!”

“They were treated with hydroxychloroquine and 500mg Vitamin C twice a day,” Diane stated. Throughout the treatments, “Doctors continued to tell it’s a ‘time treatment’ and they would both recover. I wanted to believe it, but they both sounded so ill. To be discharged they needed 2 negative swab test results 24 hours apart. Dad got his on day 14 in isolation, but mom had a negative, then 24 hours later a positive, so the process started over. She scored her 2nd negative on day 16. We kept telling her this is a test you want to fail!”

Diane stated one of the toughest things was “not being able to see my parents and knowing they could not see each other was heartbreaking. Personal trepidation is covid19…a new virus that the medical professionals are desperately trying to learn about. Mom turned 95 April 8th in isolation.”

“God heard our prayers and decided this was not the way to start their life in heaven. We give thanks to have more time with them. Right now they are in a skilled nursing facility for continued healing and physical therapy. We hope to have them home in two weeks…or less,” Diane adds. “On the drive home from hospital dad just kept saying how good it was to be outside and how good the sun felt. The first thing he wanted a good cup of coffee!”

“After conquering the virus, George and his bride of nearly 70 years are roommates once again to continue healing. They will be cheerleaders for one another during physical therapy.”

Grandpa George and Grandma Christene will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary this August 26.

Family members commented, “I’m not sure they have spent this much time apart from each other in the almost 70 years they’ve been married. Pictures just don’t do justice to how happy they must be to reunite!”

“A few months ago, my grandparents could say, ‘I’ve seen it all!’ but then this happened…We know this is not completely over, but we are thankful for the healing hands that have been placed before us and continue to pray for the recovery and rehabilitation for our grandparents.”

Son, George Wall, of Devine, added, “Our parents are a resilient couple who have lived through the Great Depression and survived WWII. Through unconditional love and firm direction, they raised their children well. In so many ways, they supported their community and friends and faithfully served God. We want to thank everyone for their prayers for my (our) parents. Mom’s and Dad’s life experiences have prepared them to deal courageously with what life brings. Our family has been blessed, and we all can be encouraged by their recovery from COVID-19.”

We thank the family of George and Christene Wall for sharing this beautiful success story during this time of crisis.
