Pirate XC cruises to 4th consecutive District 27-3A Championship

District championships are beginning to be “old hat” for Lytle Head Coach Gilbert Ruiz and his Pirate Cross Country teams. The Pirates easily ran away with the District 27-3A Championship nearly two weeks ago in Poth. Lytle scored 37 points to pull away from runner-up Dilley who finished with 76 points.
“We had four runners finish in the top 10 with Abel and Brandon getting another meet underneath them. The team has battled injuries all year and it was good to see some of them running again,” Ruiz initially stated after hoisting the district’s championship plaque. “We are trying to make it four years in a row in qualifying for the State Meet.”
This year may be the hardest of the four according to Ruiz as several runners have experienced setbacks health wise this season.
“It will be a hard task this year as injuries have sidelined most of our varsity boys for over a month. We finally got some of them running again and we get one more by regionals. We just hope that we didn’t take too long to heal and try and get our legs back under us,” Ruiz said about his outlook on the upcoming Regional championships in Corpus on Monday, October 25.
