Miguel Palma placed 2nd in the Red Dress Fashion Show hosted by the University of Incarnate Word on February 12th with his red formal gown, “Now and Forever”. He was awarded a $1,500 scholarship to attend UIW. There were 64 entries from thirteen high schools and Miguel was narrowed to the top 28 gaining access to the fashion show. The theme was heart health and Miguel’s inspiration came from a Filipino Designer, Michael Cinco. His sweetheart bell-shaped ball gown featuring a four-foot train was carefully designed and constructed taking him nearly 300 hours. Miguel self-drafted a pattern for his design and Danna Lopez modeled his dress at the show. Red satin was used with a sheer chiffon overlay accented with 600 pearl beads. The hoop skirt consists of 80+ yards of horsehair and boning for structure. Miguel began to sew last year when he took Fashion Design l; he is currently taking Advanced Fashion in his senior year at Devine High School. “Miguel has an incredible eye for design, he is determined and self-motivated which helped in success of this project. His dress along with other students sewing projects will be showcased in our Fashion Show at the end of the year,” stated Madeline Steubing.
