NJH Mustangs split action in Poteet

The Natalia Jr. High Mustangs split action during their road trip to the Strawberry Capital of Poteet last Thursday. The 7th Grade fell hard in a tough loss, as the 8th Grade Mustangs picked up another victory.
7th Grade Mustangs-The 7th grade mighty Mustangs traveled to Aggie land for a battle against Poteet. The Aggies took advantage of the excellent field position they gained upon the kick-off return. They swept around the Mustang defenders for a 34 yard touchdown, and added a two point conversion.
The Mustangs attempted to respond and started a short drive that halted after Poteet’s defense came up strong. They punted it away and Poteet went back to work.
On their second drive, they rushed for 42 yards and added another TD to the scoreboard. Going into the 2nd quarter, the Mustangs were down 0-16 and tried to get their offense going. Unfortunately, their drive ended after a failed 4th and 1 conversion.
The Aggies took over and melted the clock down. They scored on a short run into the end zone. The Mustangs had a challenge to get the ball moving and had a few errors. They fumbled the ball after a botched punt, which returned the ball to Poteet on their own 8 yard line. Poteet was able to take the ball and score another TD. They went into halftime with a 0-32 lead.
The Mustangs approached the 2nd half with a great sense of urgency. They were able to move the ball but came up short offensively. Poteet was able to score in the 3rd quarter and lead comfortably.
The Mustangs never stopped fighting and did not allow any other scores for the remaining of the game. They fell 0-40 to the Aggies. They will have their bye week next week and will start district play on 10/11 at home against Stockdale.
8th Grade Mustangs-The Mustangs were on the road in Poteet looking to improve to 3-0 on the season.
The Mustang defense set the tone for the night on the first drive of the game. Tyler Taylor was able to come up with a big tackle for a loss on 4th down.
The Mustang offense didn’t take long to get rolling as Simon Garcia took the handoff on the first offensive play and ran for a 67 yard touchdown. Garcia punched in the two point conversion and gave the Mustangs an 8-0 lead.
The defense was able to get another stop which forced a Poteet punt. The Mustangs took over on their own 37 and it took one play to score as Paul Zapata took the snap and raced around the left side for a 63 yard touchdown. Zapata also scored on the 2-point conversion as the Mustangs took a 16-0 lead in the first quarter.
The Mustangs next big play came on a Poteet 4th down punt attempt. The snap was low and RJ Velasquez came through the line to tackle the punter before he could get the punt off. The Mustangs worked the ball down field and were able to score on a 1 yard touchdown by Paul Zapata with 9 seconds remaining in the 2nd quarter. The two point conversion was good and the Stangs entered the half up 24-0.
The Mustangs took the 2nd half kickoff and marched down field leading to a 32 yard touchdown by Simon Garcia. The 2-point conversion was no good, but Natalia led 30-0.
The Natalia defense shut down the Aggies in the 30-0 victory. The defense was led by RJ Velasquez and Steven Saldana who came up with big sacks for the Stangs in the late 3rd and 4th quarter.
The offense was led by tackle Tyler Taylor who was dominant up front and paved the way for all of the Natalia backs. Simon Garcia, Paul Zapata and Elias DeLuna led the rushing attack.
The 8th Grade Mustangs are 3-0 on the season and will open district play next week vs the Stockdale Brahamas. The game is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. at Mustang Stadium!
