Bishop-The Natalia Mustangs were able to win the Region 5 Powerlifting Title for the 3rd time in program history last Thursday afternoon. Natalia used 27 team points, to finish atop of 40+ teams in attendance thanks to the efforts of ten veteran lifters including senior Regional Champion Uriel Arellano (242 lb. Weight class).
“I could not be happier with the effort and leadership shown by our boys,” Coach Tyler Seiler said. “At the beginning of the year we set one goal as a program and that was to win the regional championship and they accomplished just that.”
Natalia was able to edge 2nd place Edinburg Idea College Prep (21 points), Corpus Christi London (19 points), Edinburg College Prep (15) and Jourdanton (12) that proved to be the challenging top 5 schools out of 40+ in attendance.
Natalia Senior Uriel Arellano led the charge for the boys in blue, as he won an individual title in the 242 lb. weight class thanks t a 1,615 lb. total. His total included a 605 lb. Squat, a 465 lb. Bench press and a 545 lb. Dead lift.
Two Natalia Mustangs also were able to claim 2nd place in their respective weight classes. Adrian Vasquez did so in the 165 lb. weight class thanks to a 1,305 lb. total. His total included a 560 lb. Squat, a 265 lb. Bench press and a 480 lb. Dead lift.
Paul Billalobos was able to claim the silver in his 275 lb. weight class courtesy of a 1,650 lb. total. His total included a 700 lb. Squat, a 365 lb. Bench press and a 585 lb. Dead lift.
The final Mustang to qualify for the State Lift Meet was Michael Martinez who did so thanks to a 1,485 lb. total in the 220 lb. weight class. He used a 655 lb. Squat, a 300 lb. Bench press and a 530 lb. Dead lift to account for the total.
Other Mustang finishes included: Gustavo Gomez (242 lb. wc)-3rd place 600-325-500-1,425; Diego Zapata (165 lb. wc)-4th 525-250-485-1,260, Elijah Banda 8th 450280-470-1,200; Dustin Soto (2452 lb. wc)-4th 580-275-550-1,405, Isaiah Sanchez 275-535-1,325; Diego Hernandez (275 lb. wc)-8th place 515-315-515-1,345.
“Our boys handled adversity well and never wavered,” Coach Seiler said. “When things didn’t go our way, they buckled down and worked harder. It was a great day for our boys and our program as a whole.”
Adrian Vasquez (Sophomore), Michael Martinez (Senior), Uriel Arellano (Senior) and Paul Billalobos (Senior) qualified for the state meet which as of press time, has been postponed to an unknown date due to the Corona Virus.
