The 7th Grade Mustangs hosted the Nixon Smiley Mustangs on a chilly Halloween night on Thursday. The Natalia Mustangs kicked off and Nixon Smiley got started at the 41 yard line. Nixon Smiley struggled to move the ball and had a fourth down. They chose to go for it but were stopped. Unfortunately, there was a penalty on the play which revived the drive for Nixon Smiley. This led to a 25 yard drive which ended on a 9 yard run for a touchdown. They attempted a two point conversion, but were stopped by the mighty Mustangs.
Natalia received the kick off and started at the 40 yard line. After a few mishaps, they were forced to punt. However, the snap was high and was fumbled which was recovered by Nixon Smiley. This opportunity allowed Nixon Smiley to start their drive from their own 22 yard line. They quickly converted that costly mistake into a 22 yard touchdown pass. They were able to convert the two point attempt.
At the end of the 1st quarter, Natalia was down 0-14 and desperately needed to get things going. As they took possession, they struggled to get the offense going and turned the ball over on downs. Nixon Smiley once again had a breakout run and Denton Nelson was able to track down the running back after a 39 yard run. However, Nixon Smiley scored on the ensuing play and converted the two point attempt. Natalia had one more opportunity to get on the scoreboard. But they were not able to score and turned the ball over on a fumble. Nixon Smiley drove the ball down and threatened to score again. Luckily, Natalia’s defense came up with an enormous stop and prevented a potential touchdown.
At halftime, Natalia was down 0-22 and were looking for ways to make a comeback. The second half became a defensive battle as both squads struggled to get the ball moving. Neither team was able to score and the final score ended in Natalia falling to Nixon Smiley 0-22. They will close out their season next week as they host Jourdanton at home at 4:30 pm.
