Mustangs take on Wildcats and Wolves

On Tuesday, the Natalia Mustangs hosted Carrizo Springs in our final non-district game of the season. We opened up the game with a 10-7 lead after the 1st quarter and played really well for about the first 7 minutes of the second quarter. A quick 8-0 run by the Wildcats in the final minute of the 2nd quarter allowed them to take a 28-23 lead into the half. We were able to outscore them 11-10 in the 3rd to cut into the deficit but Carrizo played really well offensively in the 4th quarter and outscored the Mustangs 22-18 to claim the 60-52 win.

On Friday, the Mustangs opened up District 30-3A play as they welcomed the Dilley Wolves to town. The Mustangs got off to a great start as they jumped out to an early lead at the end of the 1st quarter with a score of 14-11. We continued to play well throughout the first half as they outscored Dilley 12-10 in the 2nd quarter to take a 26-21 lead into halftime. The 3rd quarter proved to be the difference in the game as the Wolves came out and outscored Natalia 28-4 to take a 39-30 lead into the 4th quarter. The Wolves would grow their lead to 11 in the early minutes of the 4th quarter before the Mustangs made their final push of the night. After some defensive pressure the Mustangs were able to go on a run and cut the deficit down to 2 with 9 seconds left in the game. With the Wolves inbounding, the Mustangs tried to foul but with no whistle, the Wolves were able to run out the final 9 seconds of the clock.

I am proud of our guys for coming in and executing the game plan we had put in place. Need to give a lot of credit to Dilley, they shot well from the outside and their 7 three-pointers were huge for them and we were not able to recover from that. We did a great job of taking care of the ball, only having 4 turnovers. You would hope you win every game when you only turn it over 4 times but Dilley did a good job of knocking down open shots when they got them.
Thoughts – We have been playing our best basketball of the season over the last couple of weeks and we just haven’t been able to get a win. I think we are really close to finding that win we need to help build some momentum as we enter the final stretch of our season.
