Music performed by highly skilled musicians with a back drop of beautiful artwork awaits the audience at the Devine Area Artists’ Series March 30 concert. The Mike Kasberg Quartet will perform and the Day Star Studio’s artists will display their artwork. Also, some gorgeous quilts by area artisans will be on display.
The Quartet specializes in swing, blues, Motown, Latin and jazz. The Kerrville area musicians will perform such tunes as “Mustang Sally,” “Sunny,” “Blue Skies,” and “Take 5.”
Mark Kasberg is an advanced performer on saxophone, clarinet and flute. He has been a high school, college and jazz band director.
Pianist, Dr. Donald Crandall, has his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from The University of Texas in Austin. He is the director of Schreiner University’s Music Department in Kerrville.
Gary Hatch is an architect in Kerrville. His love for all musical styles and a knack for singing vocal harmony along with the thump of a stand up bass allows him to perform with many groups and genres.
Byron Foster, drummer, grew up singing ‘a cappella’ in the Church of Christ. He received his first drum set at the age of 7. He has studied guitar and music theory and still loves a drum set.
Artwork from the artists who gather at Daystar Studio and Gallery will be another highlight of the evening. Joyce Bendele opened the studio in the summer of 2008. The purpose of Daystar is to provide a place for art enthusiasts to gather and work in a Christian atmosphere. Many artists from Devine and surrounding areas work and study there weekly. Joyce teaches drawing. New to Daystar is pastel artist/instructor Barbara Tarsikes. Some of the displayed artwork will be for sale. The artists who will display their work are: Egan Gleason, Paula Harvey, Floy Height, Ruthie Smith, Pat Youngblood, Ginger Maxwell, Lindy Wheeler, Cindy Smith, Dee Thompson, Mary Hernandez, Roberta Andrews, Sima Gallegoes, Barbara Tarsikes, pastel instructor, and Joyce Bendele, drawing instructor.
The concert will begin at 7:30 pm on Saturday, March 30, at the George S. Woods Community Center in Devine. Tickets are $10 at the door. Students K-12 are admitted free if accompanied by an adult.
The Devine Area Artists’ Series is made possible by 42 underwriters and six sponsors: Lytle State Bank, Morales Realty, A Bushel and a Peck, Mark Kidd’s State Farm Insurance, Security Bank of Devine, and James P. McElwee, CPA.
