The Lady Pirates are now #17 with the Texas High School Gymnastics Coaches Association. Also ranked in their district is Poth at #14 and Karnes City at #22. This is a tough district to be in but the Lady Pirates are ready to take on all challenges.
Sophomore Calyssa Sevier received a game ball from the Express News for scoring 157 points in the Harlandale Tourney. She was nominated for the Dave Campbells Texas Basketball Chicken Express but lost to not enough votes. She has now scored 800 points for her career.
Before the break Lytle took on Southwest Legacy and Pleasanton and they had to adjust to two different game styles. They beat Legacy 59-40 and then faced a big Lady Eagle zone but still won 58-26. At the Legacy game, “we started the first quarter a little slow coming off the long weekend of tournament play. The 2nd and 3rd quarters we outscored Legacy by 13 points combined giving us some cushion room in the 4th to get everyone some minutes knowing we have another game on Tuesday. I was happy by the way we played, our defense has been our strength so far this season. Putting pressure on teams and trying to be in better shape so the 4th quarter we can outlast our opponents. We had 12 steals and scored 28 points off their turnovers and shot 50% from the free throw line which is a huge improvement for us as a team,” said Coach Lori Wilson.
Leading the team was Cadee Martinez with a season high of 20 points, 5 rebounds, and 1 block. Fizz Hutton 17 points, 7 rebounds, 6 deflections, and 7 steals. Katara Whitfield 8 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 deflection, and 2 steals. Calyssa Sevier 7 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, and 5 deflections. Amelia Martinez 3 points, 4 rebounds, and 1 deflection off the bench. Nicole Godines 2 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist, 3 deflections, and 1 steal. Arianna Garcia 2 points, 2 rebounds, 1 deflection, and 2 steals.
The next day, Lytle faced off with Pleasanton. It “was a new look for us as they were big and went into a zone to start the game which slowed the game down and that is just not our style of play. At the end of the 1st it was 13-4. Then the 2nd quarter we got some fast breaks in transition to speed the game up and outscored the Eagles by 10. It was a good game for us to see some different defenses and some big size inside. We took the win 58-26 over Pleasanton with 20 steals for the game and scored 20 points off their turnovers.
