The Lady Pirates are tied for second with Karnes City and faced Poth, who leads the district, last night in Poth. Over the last few weeks, the Lady Pirates took down Jourdanton, Poteet, fells to Cole (non-district), and then beat Cotulla to earn their 5-1 district and 15-8 overall record. This Friday, they will host Dilley and Tuesday is Parents’ Night against West Campos.
December 17th, the Lady Pirates hosted the Squaws and by half time took the game. Up 28-12 at the beginning of the third, the Squaws were frustrated kept making bad passes and turn overs that Lytle continued to capitalize on. 45-38, with 7 fouls, Lytle was ready for the fourth quarter and the Squaws had lost their energy. Lytle slowed their offense down a little and worked on their plays against the man-to-man defense if they didn’t drive to the basket on a break. Lytle took the win at 61-38.
“Our defense looked good that night and the girls played well together as a team making Jourdanton have 42 turnovers and we created 27 steals,” saic Coach Lori Wilson.
Calyssa Sevier with 21 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 5 deflections, 9 steals.Cadee Martinez had 15 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 deflections, 4 steals. Fizz Hutton had 13 points, 7 rebounds, 1 assist, 11 deflections, 8 steals, 3 blocks. Nicole Godines had 5 points, 1 deflection. Katara Whitfield had 2 points, 2 rebounds, 3 deflections, 3 steals. Arianna Garcia had 2 points, 1 rebound, 1 steal. Sofia Hutton had 2 points, 1 rebound, 1 deflection.
Now 3-1, the Lady Pirates were looking to make it 4-1 when they took on Poteet on December 21st. with 22 steals and 37 turnovers, the Pirates beat the Aggies 58-20.
Martinez with 20 points, 2 rebounds, 2 deflections, 3 steals. Sevier had 13 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 6 defections, 5 steals. Hutton had 9 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 defections, 7 steals. Whitfield 6 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 block. Hutton 4 points, 6 rebounds, 2 deflections, 1 block. Garcia 2 points. Godines 2 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 defection. Martinez 2 points, 1 rebound, 2 assists, 2 defections, 2 steals.
Coming back after five days off, Lytle picked up a game against Cole to help keep the team on their toes. Earning the ball at tip off and driving to the basket, the Lady Pirates started the game with two free throws from Cadee Martinez. A few plays after her free throws, Martinez went up for a rebound and came down on another Pirate foot, hurting her ankle.
With Cole playing man to man, Lytle worked their offense and worked hard for every rebound. With fouls being called hard on Cole, Lytle was soon in bonus in the first quarter. Down 8-16 at the end of the first, Lytle outshot Cole 9-4 in the first 3 minutes of the second quarter but ended the half still behind at 23-30.
The third quarter was more aggressive from Cole, but the Lady Pirates did a great job of keeping pace and not letting Cole run away with the game. A few bad passes allowed Cole to earn some quick points and Lytle would fall 42-56.
“We lost to Cole the non district game 56-42 it was after the 5 day layoff and I added this game because it was our bye week and I didn’t want the girls to be off that many days without a game. Cadee Martinez went down in the first minute with a ankle so we had to readjust she has been our go to the last few games. It was a good game to see what the playoffs will be like if we continue to the post season,” said Coach Lori Wilson.
Sevier with 15 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 6 deflections, 3 steals. Hutton had 12 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 5 deflections, 1 steal. Godines had a season high 10 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist, 1 deflection, 2 steals. Martinez had 2 points before leaving the game with her ankle injury. Whitfield had 2 points,, 7 rebounds, 1 assist, 3 deflections, 1 steal, 1 block. Martinez had 1 point, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 deflections.
Facing Cotulla on New Year’s Eve, they opened the game with a great first quarter, outscoring Cotulla 14-8. This would continue with the game really picking up in the third with the defense holing Cotulla to just 8 points. Starting the fourth 46-29, Lytle continued to push hard and with Martinez back from her ankle injury, the team worked well together and every player that dress out added to the scoreboard. Deep in the fourth quarter, up by more than 20 points, Lytle continued to push into the paint and score. Lytle won 61-35 after Whitfield sank a jumper in the last few seconds.
Sevier with 15 points, 8 rebounds, 1 assist, 4 deflections, 6 steals, 1 block. Hutton had a double-double 13 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assist, 4 defections, 7 steals! Martinez returned after a ankle injury and had 9 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal. Whitfield had 6 points, 12 rebounds, 3 defections. Martinez had 6 points, 1 rebound, 3 assist, 1 deflection, 2 steals, 1 block. Garcia had4 points, 5 rebounds. Diaz had 4 points, 1 rebound, 1 deflection. Godines had 2 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal. Hutton had 2 points, 5 rebounds.
