Lady Mustangs picking up intensity and making great comebacks

The Lady Mustangs traveled to Nueces Canyon for Tuesday’s game. We lost by 7, 43 – 50. I was extremely proud of the effort these girls gave to fight their way back into the game being down by 16 at the half. I challenged them at half to pick up their intensity and lower their turnovers. That’s exactly what they did. We were able to get more steals in the second half with our defensive pressure, and we maintained good possessions on offense to get back into the game. There’s definitely no quit in the young ladies. We are now 1-3 for the season.
Points: Tina Fulton 8, Bella Martinez 2, Naomi Garcia 2, Heidi Vazquez 3, Jelli Padilla 12, Kylee Spangler 11, Katelin Corona 5. Also playing for the varsity was Sophi Padilla and Ebonnee Velasquez. Q1 7-13, Q2 13-29, Q3 37-38, Q4 43-50. FTP 69%.
The Lady Mustangs traveled to Knippa on Friday losing 25-32. I felt like we started off slow but had a great second half. Earlier on we couldn’t play defense or buy a shot. We finally settled down in the second half and made a comeback being down 8-21 at the half. We pulled within 2 at one point, but could not turn the corner. I was extremely proud of the resilience these ladies showed by not giving up.
Fulton 1, Garcia 2, S. Padilla 3, Vazquez 3, J. Padilla 4, Spangler 12. Q1 5-6, Q2 8-21, Q3 14-28, Q4 25-32. FTP 27%.
Saturday we took on Pleasanton. The JV won 38-23 and made 86% of their free throws. Tina Vera had 8 points, Trista Boucher 22, Angelina Duenes 6, and Jazmin Sanchez 2. Q1 12-9, Q2 14-9, Q3 23-13, Q4 38-23.
The Varsity Lady Mustangs fell short 43-51. It was a close game the entire night. A few key turnovers late made most of the difference. Pleasanton’s size gave us a lot of trouble early on, but the girls made adjustments and were able to keep things close. We emphasized shooting the ball going into this game, and we had our best 3-point shooting night with seven 3’s. I was really proud of some of our role players that came off the bench and drained some big shots. Sophi Padilla and Bella Martinez each had two 3’s coming off the bench at key times. I think having a diverse scoring group will make us a little harder to guard as we continue to get more comfortable in the offense.
Fulton 3, Martinez 6, Garcia 2, S. Padilla 8, Vazquez 4, J. Padilla 8, Spangler 12. A1 10-11, Q2 23-23, Q3 32-34, Q4 43-51. FTP 43%.
