John Clifton Morrow, of Castroville, passed away on March 25, 2018 in a Lytle care center, at the age of 88 years. He was born December 31, 1929 in San Antonio, Texas.
John was a veteran of the Korean War, serving as a surgical tech/medic in the Army from 1948-1952. On November 3, 1961, he married Pauline Marie Altman. John and Pauline became residents of Castroville in 1962. He retired from Kelly Air Force Base after 35 years as a sheet metal mechanic.
He loved the outdoors and enjoyed camping, fishing and spending time in his garden. He raised a bobwhite quail from incubation, named “Ladybird”, whom he adored. There was no casino that he didn’t like. He was a terrific stone mason and expert house builder. John knew every aspect of home building, from electrical to plumbing to framing. John always did his duty and provided well for his family.
The last twenty years or so, John had several hip replacements, even doing without one hip. That did not deter him. He took to his scooter well, driving it at top speed and he could round a corner on a dime. It always amazed us that he didn’t get thrown off the scooter. John was bedridden at the very end, but never complained. He was always cracking a joke. In some ways, he became childlike. At times he would wring his hands and look confused. To us that witnessed this, it was very humbling, and we couldn’t have felt more love for him. John was the definition of courage, especially the last few years. He asked for his mother and father frequently. Now he is with them, Praise God.
John was preceded in death by his parents, John B. and Verda V. Morrow.
Survivors include his wife of over 56 years, Pauline Morrow of Castroville; children, Johnny Wayne (Sharon) Morrow of Poteet, Randy Lee (Rhonda) Morrow of Bulverde, twins, Brenda Kay Morrow and Karen Ann Morrow Triana both of Castroville; grandchildren, Johnny (Lorena) Morrow, Jr., Katie Chain, Lindsey (Cody) Pyle, Ryan (Amber) Morrow and Sarah Triana; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
