John Brieden, Sr.

John Brieden, Sr., of Castroville, passed away on January 23, 2020 at his home at the age of 80 years. He was born December 18, 1939 in Hondo, Texas, one of three children born to Richard Joseph Brieden and Josephine Theresa Vogel Brieden.
John graduated from St. Louis High School in 1958. He worked for the Texas Department of Transportation Highway Department, Conrad Oil Company and retired from EG&G Automotive Research as an automotive mechanic. After he retired, he went to work for Hondo ISD Transportation as well as Kempf’s Lawn Mower Repair.
On November 21, 1959, John married Dorothy Lea Mumme at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Hondo. John and Dorothy celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this past November. They were blessed with four children, eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Brieden of Castroville; children, John H. Brieden, Jr. of Hondo, Harold Brieden (Joni) of Castroville, De Ann Qualls (Mac) of Kerrville and Janet French (Dan) of Castroville; grandchildren, Richard Brieden (Amber), Ashley Brieden, Ryan Brieden, Zachary Qualls, Brieana Qualls, Jack Qualls, Tori French and Billy French; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Patricia “Patsy” Haby (Larry) of Castroville and sister-in-law, Colleen Brieden of Dunlay; as well as several nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Jo Brieden and his brother, William “Billy” Brieden.
Visitation will be Thursday, January 30, 2020 starting at 5:00 pm at St. Louis Catholic Church, with the Holy Rosary recited at 7:00 pm. Mass of the Resurrection will be Friday, January 31, 2020 at 10:00 am at St. Louis Catholic Church. Interment will follow at St. Louis Catholic Cemetery in Castroville, Texas.
Memorials may be made in John’s memory to St. Louis Catholic School, the American Cancer Society or charity of your choice.
