Holguin leads #19 Pirates past Mustangs

A time-out was called, as Jorge Holguin nailed one of many buckets in the game last Friday night before a standing room only LHS Gym. Cheerleaders ran onto the court, and showcased a large banner stating he had officially scored 1,000 career points, which is something not many can say. He received a standing ovation from a packed home-side as even the fans in the stands in blue and white showed their respect for his efforts.
Holguin scored 34 points Friday night, leading the Pirates past rival Natalia (5-21, 1-6) in a lop-sided 102-53 victory. The win kept the Pirates headed toward a 30-3A title, as they improved to 25-1 overall and 7-0 in district play.
Lytle simply had too many weapons for the Natalia Mustangs to handle, as the black and gold completed their season sweep of the boys in blue. Lytle knocked down a total of twelve three-pointers in the game.
Lytle was able to outscore Natalia 24-10 in the opening quarter before opening up the game in the second quarter. Lytle hammered Natalia outside and inside as seven different players fueled the Pirates to a 32 point effort and a monster 56-23 lead at the half.
In the second half, Natalia came out and really played well in the 3rd quarter. Natalia scored a game high seventeen points, as Matt Contreras scored seven of the seventeen from the free throw line for Natalia.
On the opposite end of the court, Holguin scored seven of the twenty-one points giving the black and gold a 77-40 lead going into the 4th.
Lytle finished with a 4th quarter advantage en route to a 102-53 victory.
The black and gold continued to show a good mix of speed, quickness, and the ability to score not only out-side, but inside as well are attributes that should lead to a lengthy playoff run in 2019.
