A week of cooler weather and 52 service calls. Property crimes were “light” this week. John’s Small Engine Repair reported the theft of a lawnmower valued at $50. If I was going to steal a lawnmower, I wouldn’t pick an old one that was at the repair shop. From stealing an “old one” to stealing a “cold one”, our other property crime was a “beer run” from CVS Pharmacy. An 18-pack of bud light was taken; it was valued at $18.99.
We only took one person to jail. It was Sunday evening and this guy was bothering customers at the Yum Market (Old Valero). Cpl. Robison and Ofc. A. Lopez arrived and identified him. He had three active warrants, a felony out of Caldwell Co. and a couple more out of Guadalupe Co. We were processing him at the PD and he asked me about his car, I told him that it was impounded. He asked me if we could just park it at my house and he would pick it up when he got out of jail. I told him that I don’t think my wife would like that idea. That is the first time that has been suggested to me in all these years.
We took a report of an actual aggravated robbery, which is rare for us (thank God). It occurred on Thursday, Oct. 22 at about 10:25 PM. Ofc. Sergio Pena was dispatched to the parking lot of the Whataburger/HEB C-store to meet the victim. The victim stated that he was using an online marketplace to sell a gold chain; he agreed to meet the “buyer.” The “buyer” decided to pull out a handgun and demand the chain along with the victim’s wallet, phone, and car keys. The victim complied and the suspect took off in a Blue Ford 150 and headed north back towards San Antonio. The F150 was occupied with a female as well. Lt. Dear is handling the investigation. I cannot stress enough that people should use extreme caution when meeting up like that, don’t let the lure of a quick buck cloud your judgment.
If you are in the San Antonio area you should check out Government Canyon State Natural Area, it’s off of 1604 near Helotes. It’s huge with about 12,000 acres, which is about 11,975 more than I actually could cover. Lots of nice trails and great views. I hear a lot about it but we just visited it recently, the family had a great time and you are just minutes from all the dining and shopping of a big city.
So Halloween is upon us. I have been asked, “Did the city cancel Halloween?” The short answer is “No.” We would ask and suggest that if you are a “candy getter” or a “candy giver” that you follow CDC guidelines. There is a lot of info. on the CDC website. Here are some activities listed as “High Risk”:
Participating in traditional trick-or-treating where treats are handed to children who go door to door
Having trunk-or-treat where treats are handed out from trunks of cars lined up in large parking lots
Attending crowded costume parties held indoors
Going to an indoor haunted house where people may be crowded together and screaming
Going on hayrides or tractor rides with people who are not in your household
Using alcohol or drugs, which can cloud judgment and increase risky behaviors
So there you have it! Might be best to stay home and watch a movie. One suggestion listed is “Having a virtual Halloween costume contest.” I guess this would be pretty safe but the truth is, I am about “virtualized out.” I have done enough online training and Zoom meetings for a lifetime, but I will continue to do them as long as it is the safest option.
