Gilbert Sanborn Flanders, of San Antonio, passed away on January 4, 2018 at the age of 78 years. He was born May 8, 1939 in Freeport, Maine. He graduated from Freeport High School in Maine. Gilbert enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served for almost 20 years during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. After his military service, he began a new career in the South Texas Oil Fields as a mechanical engineer. His last career was as a postal mail carrier.
Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Elizabeth May Oliver Flanders; infant son, Joshua Dean Flanders; grandson, Jake Flanders and daughter-in-law, Pam Flanders.
Survivors include his wife, Alicia Sanchez Flanders; children, Michael Flanders, Lynnette Flanders, Thomas Flanders, Kristina Flanders and Jessica Rushing (John Burchett); 20 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; siblings, Bruce (Patricia) Flanders, Robert (Nancy) Flanders, Patricia (Merrill) Kaiser; step-children, Arthur Garza, Antonio Garza, Angelica Garza, Alonzo (Angie) Garza and Pablo (Aurora) Garza, Jr., as well as numerous step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren.
A Memorial Graveside Service with military honors and interment will be 9:45 am on Friday, January 19, 2018 at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
