Freshman Warhorses win Dilley Tournament

It was an exciting game against Pearsall on November 30th. Playing on the road, the Freshman Warhorses were ahead at the end of each quarter except the last. Tied 26-26, the teams went into overtime. Devine came out on top after outscoring Pearsall 5-3 for the 31-29 win!
It was the first time this season the boys experienced an overtime thriller. As a coach it was nice to see the team keep their composure when the game got dicey,” said Coach Zachary Valenzuela.
Tony Saldivar had 11 points, Brayden Reyes 6, Donavan Dixon 6, Carter Faubel 7, and EJ Gonsales 1 point.
Over the weekend, the Freshman Warhorses headed to Dilley for a tournament. Their first game was against the hosts and it was also the third time the teams have faced each other this season. “It’s hard to beat a team three times in a row but we persevered,” said Coach Valenzuela. Tied 7-7 at the half, the freshmen started to gain the lead in the second and finished the half 15-13. In the third quarter they pulled away and won it 32-24.
Erik Baltazar scored 10 points, Saldivar 1, Reyes 5, Matthew Gomez 8, and Faubel had 8 points.
Their second match up was with Del Rio and it was a Warhorse power show. “It was a total team effort from the boys; our defense finally came together as we held Del Rio to only 3 points at the half. Faubel was solid for us in the paint, leading the team in rebounds and points with 8,” added Coach Valenzuela. Devine won 41-15.
Ayden Leal sank a 3 pointer, Baltazar 3, Saldivar 3, Reyes 4, Lyle Canada 3, Gomez 1, Dixion 5, Saul Martinez 5, Michael Girtz 4, Ethan Appling 2, and Faubel 8 points.
Their third game was also with Del Rio, and the results were the same just better. This time Devine held them to 14 points while scoring 49. This was also their season high according to Coach Valenzuela.
Saldivar had 7 points, Reyes 6, Canada 2, Gomez 7, Julio Ortiz 3, Dixion 4, Girtz 2, Appling 6, Faubel 9, and Gonzales had 1 point.
“Because of how the tournament was set up we had to face off against Cotulla’s JV squad in the championship game. The game came down to the wire and ended on a last second steal from Brayden Reyes who then was able to knock down a clutch free throw to put the game away!” reported Coach Valenzuela. Devine won the Championship game 33-29.
Dixion led with 14 points, Leal 3, Saldivar 3, Reyes 3, and Faubel had 7 points.
Devine had three Warhorses named to the All-Tournament Team! Carter Faubel, Tony Saldivar, and Donavan Dixion earned the titles.
The Freshman will be back home on December 7th to face off with Hondo. Games will start at 5:00 pm.
