Devine XC battles the heat at home meet

A more difficult course on a blistering day is what was in store for the Arabian and Warhorse Cross Country teams last Wednesday. City of Devine Golf Course hosted nearly 300 runners from all divisions in Devine’s second hosted Cross Country meet of the season.
Devine’s golf course is the site once again on Wednesday, October 2 and Wednesday, October 16. October 2 is a district preview that includes all of the District 29-4A schools plus a few others while the October 16 meet is solely district schools.
Brooke Runyan led the Arabians posting a 15:34 and finishing 5th place overall. Brianna Bowyer (15:47), Audrey Longoria (15:58), Espi Mendoza (16:01.1), Kristina Moralez (16:01.4), and Kelli Geyer (16:12) finished seventh through eleventh respectively. Brianna Bernal placed 20th with a time of 18:30.
In the team standings, the Arabians finished runner-up to Pleasanton. The Eagles posted 16 points while Devine had 39.
Xavier Garza continues to pace the Warhorse varsity team finishing second overall with a time of 19:42. Chris Ortiz (20:49-5th), Rylan Mata (22:18-10th), Zachary Alvarez (23:23-13th), TJ Mendoza (23:33-14th), Marcus Angel Espi Espinosa (23:46-16th), Matthew Madrid (23:51-17th), and Michael Reichel (26:14-22nd) rounded out the varsity division.
The Warhorses placed second as a team to champion Hondo 44-26 in the overall point standings.
Shelby Joslin led the JV Arabians coming in 8th place with a time of 17:44. Rebecca Mares was neck-and-neck with Shelby at the finish line placing 9th with a 17:45. Corinne Fowler (19:12-13th), Allie Dugosh (19:16-14th), and Trinity Black (20:09-17th) rounded out the JV Arabian times and places.
Three JV Warhorses ran Wednesday. Ryan Leal (26:43-13th), Owen Fowler (27:28-19th), and Arturo Diaz (29:14-26th) continue to improve their per mile times as the season rolls forward.
