Devine tennis takes 2nd at Uvalde Invitational

It was another very successful tennis weekend for the Devine Warhorses and Arabians. All but one entry made it to the semi-finals round of the tournament. Eagle Pass High School won 1st overall team plaque, Devine 2nd and Ingram was 3rd. “We are improving every week, working on individual goals, strategies and the mental aspects of the game. Saturday’s matches were a good test of changing strategies to overcome the strong winds that came in with the cold front.”
Arabian Isabella Elias won the gold medal in Girls Singles #2 bracket. She beat Gifford from Stacey HS, 6-0, 6-1 her first round, then played Hernandez from Sabinal. She split sets, 6-4, 2-6 and won a close tie-breaker 10-8. Isabella’s semi-finals was a quick match beating Perez from Ingram, 6-1, 6-0. She won the championship match against L. Sapp from D’Hanis, 6-2, 6-1. Congrats Bella on winning 1st place in GS #2 bracket. Arabian Brooke Runyan won 2nd place, losing to a tough opponent from Burbank HS in the championship match. She had three quick matches only losing 9 games, beating girls from Carrizo Springs, Navarro, and Eagle Pass. Saturday morning she lost to Val Cavazos 1-6, 1-6 in the championship match. Congrats on winning 2nd in the GS #1 bracket.
Arabians #1 Doubles Malvin Flores/Laurel Spannagel won 3rd place. They had two quick matches against Stacey HS and Knippa, only losing 1 game. In the semi-finals they lost to a solid team from Navarro, Hoffman/Parrott. On Saturday morning Flores/Spannagel won the 3rd place match against Ingram’s Agulto/Rios. Congrats on winning 3rd in GD #1 bracket. Arabians #2 Doubles Amy Bailey/JoJo Villanueva won three straight matches to put them in the championship match Saturday morning. They beat teams from Sabinal, Ingram, and Uvalde. They lost to an experienced team of Martinez/Trevino from Eagle Pass. Congrats on winning 2nd place in the GD #2 bracket.
Warhorse Jake Harrell won 2nd place in Boys Singles #1 bracket. He beat players from Burbank HS and Ingram. In the semi-finals Jake beat H. Bradley of Navarro, 6-1, 6-2. Jake then split sets with R. Schmidt of Nueces Canyon; 6-4, 6-1, which forced an exciting tie-breaker. Jake played well but lost the hard fought match with a tie-breaker score of 10-6. Congrats Jake on winning 2nd place. Warhorse Freshman Ryan Castro made his Varsity debut. He lost his first match but then won the next two matches. Saturday morning he played in the consolation finals match in Boys Singles #2 bracket. He lost a tough one but played well and got a lot of experience. Congrats on winning 12th place in your 1st Varsity tournament.
Warhorse Boys #1 Doubles team Mason Zenon/Caeden Alvarez had a very challenging bracket. They beat Nueces Canyon in an exciting tie-breaker, 6-3, 3-6 (10-8) in the first round. Zenon/Alvarez then played the #1 seed from Navarro HS. Once again they had to battle through a tough tie-breaker for the match which they won 2-6, 6-3, (10-6). The duo was not able to win the next two matches. Both Ingram and Knippa had very solid, experienced teams. Alvarez/Zenon won 4th place in an extremely tough #1 Boys Doubles bracket.
#1 Mixed Doubles duo Preslee Quisenberry/Toby Ramos competed well getting a bye in the first round, then beating Pleasanton 6-0, 6-2. In the semi-finals they lost to a very experienced Eagle Pass team that ultimately won the bracket. Saturday morning they easily defeated Uvalde 6-1, 6-2 winning 3rd place. Congrats to Preslee and Toby. #2 Mixed Doubles team. Denton Zuercher/Cameron English won 2 quick rounds against teams from Bracketville, and Eagle Pass Winn. They were not able to win the next two matches, so they placed 4th.
