Charles Phillip “Phil” Rodgers

Charles Phillip “Phil” Rodgers, of Castroville, passed away on September 1, 2021 at the age of 87. He was born August 29, 1934 in Bertram, Texas to Murray Bass Rodgers and Clara Mabel Hill Rodgers.
Phil graduated from Bertram High School in 1951 and attended Tarleton State University, Southwest Texas State University and then Texas A&M.
Phil was an ag teacher for thirty-four years and had a lasting impact on many of his students. He taught at Castroville High School, Priddy High School, and spent his last twenty-eight years of teaching at Medina Valley High School.
Also known as Daddy, Uncle Phil, Mr. Rodgers, and most often, Pops—he was loved by many. One of his best qualities was his ability to connect with people. He never met a stranger, and always had a great story and laugh to share. Through the years, he made more friends than you can count, and he always remembered them.
Phil loved sharing his passions with his children and grandchildren, and spent many years cooking, ranching, hunting, and raising livestock with both generations. His family fondly remembers their time together skiing in Crested Butte, feeding goats and cows in Bertram, fishing in Port Aransas, and participating in chuckwagon cookoffs in Ruidoso. At the end of the day, he was happiest to sit in a recliner and love on one of his great-grandbabies.
He was a lifetime member and past president of the American Chuck Wagon Association, committee member for the San Antonio Livestock Exposition and Austin Star of Texas Fair and Rodeo, president of the Castroville Chamber of Commerce, and director and member of the Agricultural Teachers Association of Texas. Through decades of service to these groups, he made some of his most treasured friends.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Pauline Rodgers of Castroville; daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and James King of Fort Davis; grandchildren, Randall (Megan) Rodgers of Castroville, Devyn (Tyler) Bludau of Castroville, Haley (Jimmy) Wentworth of Dallas, and Harrison King of Austin; great-grandchildren, Emma Kate and Grant Rodgers, Paetyn and Everett Bludau; his sister, Athleen Blaine; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Phil was preceded in death by his parents, Jiggs and Mabel Rodgers; brother, Murray Hill Rodgers; brother-in-law, Jim Blaine; and his best friend, Emma Jewell Goodwin.
