Arabians win Cole Tournament

We went 5-0 on the weekend and won the Cole tournament. We had a really good weekend. The girls played well and really got after it on the defensive end of the floor. We moved the ball well on offense and we shared the ball with each other as well. Everyone on the team contributed to the success of the weekend. It was a total team effort.
Thursday we started off the day with a win over Lytle. We got out to an early 30-11 lead at halftime and never looked back. We did a good job of moving the ball against Lytle’s zone defense. We were able to spread them out and take advantage of some of their aggressiveness by moving the ball quickly. We didn’t have a great shooting game, but we rebounded the ball well and that allowed us to score 23 second chance points.

Thursday evening we played Donna. We really did a good job of applying defensive pressure to their guards and that caused a lot of chaos and havoc defensively. This led to some easy points early. Again, we got out to a big lead and finished the game off strong. Our defensive intensity was solid and we did a good job of sharing the ball offensively.
Q1 12-3, Q2 24-5, Q3 34-11, Q4 46-11. FTP 66.7%. Points: Hein 12, Runyan 8, Mara 8, Zamora 2, Taylor 14, Wofford 2. Blocks: Hein 1, Mata 2, Taylor 1.
Friday morning started with a game vs Roma. Again, we were able to put a lot of pressure on the ball defensively and this led to several Roma turnovers and easy opportunities for us on the offensive end. We didn’t do a great job of taking care of the ball and on occasion we got to playing a little too fast and a bit out of control. Once we settled down and played at our pace things really went well for us.
Q1 22-0, Q2 32-11, Q3 46-20, Q4 58-25. FTP 43%. Points: Rodriguez 3, Shook 2, Hein 12, Runyan 9, Mata 6, Zamora 12, Taylor 10, Wofford 4. Rebounds: Rodriguez 3, Shook 1, Hein 2, Bowyer 2, Runyan 9, Mara 1, Zamora 7, Taylor 5, Wofford 2. Steals: Rodriguez 4, Shook 2, Hein 5, Bowyer 4, Runyan 2, Mata 4, Zamora 5, Taylor 2, Wofford 2. Blocks: Hein 2, Runyan 1.
Friday evening we played a very athletic Cole team. Cole showed us several different defensive looks and I thought we did really well to attack all of them. We did not shoot the ball well from the perimeter, but once we started moving the ball, we found, and started making open shots. Cole’s ability to rebound gave us a little bit of a problem early on but we got a few things figured out and we were able to keep them off the boards in the second half. Once we did that, we were able to pull away and win the game.
Q1 16-11, Q2 34-18, Q3 41-29, Q4 56-32. Points: Rodriguez 2, Shook 2, Hein 2, Runyan 15, Mata 8, Zamora 11, Taylor 10, Wofford 4. Rebounds: Rodriguez 3, Shook 2, Hein 2, Runyan 4, Mata 5, Zamora 4, Taylor 5, Wofford 1. Steals: Shook 1, Hein 2, Runyan 1, Mata 4, Zamora 3, Taylor 1, Wofford 1. Blocks: Zamora 1.
Saturday morning we played a quick and athletic La Vernia team. La Vernia was 4-0 in the tournament at the time so this game became the championship game of the tournament. Both teams got off to a fast start in the first quarter. La Vernia did a good job of constantly applying pressure to our guards throughout the game. However, our guards did an outstanding job of controlling the tempo of the game and that allowed us to play at the pace we wanted to play. We had a few spells where we played a little faster than we wanted, but for the most part, we really played out our pace. Defensively we were able to wear down La Vernia and force them into some tough shots, especially in the second half. We did a great job rebounding and getting second chance points on offense and more importantly, defensively, our rebounding allowed us to get out into transition and score some easy points as well. I thought the girls did a really good job of playing aggressively when needed and attacking the basket. It was a really solid win.
Q1 18-15, Q2 31-25, Q3 48-34, Q4 66-48. FTP 55%. Points: Rodriguez 2, Hein 13, Runyan 21, Mata 11, Zamora 9, Taylor 10. Rebounds: Rodriguez 3, Shook 2, Hein 5, Runyan 8, Mata 9, Zamora 3, Taylor 7, Wofford 1. Steals: Shook 1, Hein 2, Runyan 2, Mata 4, Zamora 2. Blocks: Hein 1, Runyan 1.
The tournament showed us a variety of different looks both offensively and defensively. The girls did a really good job of adjusting to different situations and they were very receptive to learning on the fly. I felt like we got better as a team during this tournament and that is always the goal this time of the season. Right now we are 6-1 on the year.
The Arabians will play in Bandera December 5th and then in the Marion Tournament December 5-7th. The Devine Varsity Tournament is December 12-14th.
