Ann Kathleen Harris (Whetstone, Dooley) passed away peacefully on June 20, 2018, in her home in Devine, TX, at the age of 88. Ann was born on January 16, 1930 in San Antonio TX. She was the eldest of five daughters of Ollie and Stella Whetstone.
For the first five years of her life Ann had wonderful memories of living with her parents in Grey Forest, TX in their home off Scenic Loop Rd. Her family moved to Big Springs, TX, where her sisters, Marina and soon after Theresa were born. Her daughter can remember Ann saying that things were never quite the same after that as she no longer had her mother and father all to herself. Later her sisters Grace and then Sue were born. At that time, the family had moved to San Antonio, TX. Ann attended school at Edgewood High School where she was crowned the Most Beautiful Girl in school. Ann had many wonderful stories and memories of life with her parents and sisters growing up. She remained close to her sisters her whole life, talking on the phone with them every day. After high school, Ann married Richard Dooley whose family lived across the street from hers. Ann and Richard moved to Devine, TX, in 1950 and had four children, Michael, Linda, Leslie and Jennifer. Ann worked at the Medina Valley State Bank in Devine, Texas where she met many life-long friends. Ann and Richard were married for 45 years until Richard’s death in 1993. Ann married her 2nd husband, Ken Harris, in 1994 and they lived together in San Antonio, Texas, at the beautiful home Ken had built himself. Ann and Ken were married for almost 21 years until Ken’s death in 2015. During that time, they had many adventures together and embraced life. Ann caught some very impressive fish in Alaska and out fished many seasoned fishermen. She also had an excellent aim and made a lot of hunters envious of her shooting skills. Ann has been living next to her daughter Linda and son-in-law Ray Byrd in Devine, Texas for the past 4 years. She was a member of the Black Creek Baptist Church.
Anyone who knew Ann knew what a sweet and loving person she was. It is impossible to deny that one of Ann’s greatest gifts in life was her sweet and giving nature. She loved people and was always kind to everyone. It has been said by many people that Ann was like an angel on earth. She loved visiting, laughing and talking with people. Every year she would sit down and record everyone’s birthday and anniversary into her new calendar. Her little black book which was filled with everyone’s phone numbers and addresses was well worn. One of Ann’s favorite past times was going through her black book of numbers, calling and talking to family and friends. If Ann had been a gunslinger in the old west and her phone was her gun, she would have been infamous; she always had her phone with her. Talking on the phone wasn’t the only thing she loved she also loved listening, singing and dancing to music. She listened to all kinds of music from many different eras. She loved the 40’s through the 80’s, classical to country. Music brought her great joy in life. She especially loved Christmas music any time of the year. Ann loved watching old movies, the Hallmark channel, Christmas movies and of course, The Wheel of Fortune.
To her family, she could always be counted on for a listing ear, a hug, or anything anyone needed. Ann loved to help people and was very giving with her time and money. Although sometimes she gave too much, this is just who she was; it was important to her to be able to help others.
She is preceded in death by her parents Ollie and Stella Whetstone, her husband Richard Dooley, her second husband Ken Harris, her daughter Leslie Dooley, her sisters, Wilma Whetstone and Marina Newton, and many other loved ones.
She is survived by her son Michael Dooley of Alvin, TX, her daughter Linda and husband Ray Byrd of Devine, TX, her daughter Jennifer and husband Mark Harris of Corpus Christi, TX; her sisters Theresa and husband Walter Baker of Devine, TX, Grace and husband John Fouts of San Antonio, TX, Sue and husband Jeff Barrett of San Antonio, TX; grandchildren, Angela Byrd, Daniel Dooley, Amy Hymer, Johnathon Dooley, Lori Richards, Christopher Dooley, Aerin Harris; great-grandchildren, Tyler, Brittany, Mason, Maddi, Laney, and great-great-grandchild, Tanner, her church sisters and family, and numerous other relatives and friends.
