8th grade Colts hold Marion scoreless

Xavier Contreras blocks for Zackery Rico.

The Devine 8th grade Colts won their first football game of the season against Marion on Thursday, September at Warhorse Stadium. They were able to hold Marion scoreless, winning 22-0.
Since Marion did not have a B team they played a mini scrimmage prior to the game with 15 plays offense and 15 plays defense. Marion was able to score once with a nice drive in their opening series and Devine’s Iggy Cisneros was also able to score with a 65 yard run.
“Offense took a quarter to get settled in. The kids were so excited to play that we had a few miscues in the first quarter. Sage Cruz ran the ball real well which added a different dimension to our offense,” stated Coach Lon Cozby. He further stated, “Linebackers Zack Rico and Zack Nowicki led a defense that kept a really good Marion offense from finding a groove. Robert Rosas and Payton Carr added some tough hits to go along with Rico and Nowicki. Outlaw Walker had a great play where he ran through a lead blocker and layed out the ball carrier and Robert Russell had a touchdown saving tackle late in the game to preserve the shutout.”
