The 8th grade Devine Colts got their second win in a row last Thursday defeating the visiting Comfort Bobcats 20-6 at Warhorse Stadium. The Colts beat Uvalde in their season opener two weeks ago.
While neither team reached pay dirt in the first quarter, the 8th Colts came alive in the second quarter. Ismael Torres scored the game’s first touchdown on a 1-yard run, while Tyler Pike caught a two-point pass from quarterback Jacob Rodriguez to give Devine an 8-0 lead with 5:47 to go in the second quarter.
After forcing a Comfort punt, Rodriguez hit Evan Sanchez on a 36-yard scoring strike with 1:30 to go before halftime. That touchdown gave Devine a 14-0 advantage going into the break.
Halfback Wero Torres sweep to the outside put another six-points on the Brown Chevrolet scoreboard to boost the Colt lead to 20-0.
Comfort scored their lone touchdown on the last play of the third quarter to trim the lead to 20-6 but they would get no closer as Devine shut out the Bobcats the rest of the way.
“Jacob has been working very hard on throwing the ball, and it showed,” stated Coach Cozby about quarterback Jacob Rodriguez. “He completed some good passes and is only getting better. This will open up our run game and make us less predictable.”
Coaching the Colts are Lon Cozby, Quenton Sanders, and Jacob Sanchez.
